As Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), we aim to help everyone in our school stay safe near roads. Our mission is to learn about crossing roads carefully, avoiding distractions, and always remembering to look and listen. We will also learn about the importance of making sensible choices near roads and how this helps build a safer school community.
Today the JRSOs learned about the Green Cross Code. They discovered the different ways to cross roads safely, such as using a subway, footbridge, island, or crossing patroller. They also learned the important saying: THINK, STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. To put their learning into practice, they acted out role plays showing how to cross the road safely!
Some fantastic role plays from today! The JRSOs showed great teamwork and communication skills while practising how to cross roads safely.
Today we learned all about finding the safest places to cross roads.
We started by talking about the different types of pedestrian crossings we see in our local area. We learned the names of several kinds, including zebra crossings, island crossings, pelican crossings, and traffic light crossings. We also explored other safe ways to cross roads, such as using subways and footbridges, and shared where we have seen them nearby. Then we spotted them on a driving video.
Next, we discussed why some crossings are safer than others. For example, zebra crossings have bold black and white stripes to help drivers see pedestrians clearly, while pelican crossings use traffic lights to stop cars and let people cross safely.
To finish, we worked in pairs to match pictures of crossings to their names and everyone did a great job!
Afterwards, we began working on our JRSO logo… watch this space for the final design!
Today we met our new group of Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO), who made a fantastic start in learning about how to keep everyone safe on and around our roads.
In today’s first focus lesson, the group explored a key road safety message: being seen at night. As the evenings get darker, visibility becomes more challenging for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, making this an essential topic for us all.
The JRSOs learned how wearing bright and reflective clothing can make a huge difference after dark. We discussed how reflective materials work by bouncing light from car headlights back towards drivers, helping them spot people from much further away. The children then designed their own reflective clothing and/or keyrings.
Remember: Be bright, be reflective, and be seen! 14.01.26
