人が人として生きるために 本来の人の在り方を目指して
地球規模の課題が山積みとなった20世紀、資本主義の弊害として搾取の構造や格差社会が生まれ、このまま皆が利己主義に走ると世界は破綻してしまうことが明白になりました。またテクノロジーがさらに進化し、AIをはじめとするartificialつまり人工的なものがさらに世界に広がっていくでしょう。こうした中、我々一人一人に突き付けられている課題は、相手を尊重しながら個を大切にする社会、劣悪な環境や極端な貧困を強いられることなく生きることの喜びを共有し、自分たちが作り出した人工的なものに支配されることなく生き生きとした創造を続ける社会、自然と人工が調和した社会、そのような社会を作っていくには何をすべきか、ということです。
国際基督教大学（以下、ICU）は、第二次世界大戦への深い反省に立ち、世界平和に資する有為の人材を養成することを使命に1953年に献学された大学です。以来、約70年にわたり使命の実現のために、リベラルアーツ教育を実践してきました。
リベラルアーツ教育とは、道徳的で市民性のある人格、世界をより良くするという目的を持った知の活用とも言われます。つまり、他者のために自分を役立てようとする能動的な人や、「平和」や「人が人として生きる権利」を維持・構築するための行動を起こせる人の育成を目的としているとも言え、その結果として、国連をはじめとする国際機関やNGO、ビジネス界、教育界など世界のさまざまな分野で本学の卒業生が活躍しています。
私が以前から大事にしていることの一つに、「habitable（人が人として生きることができる）な場所を作る」ということがあります。夢のような場所や便利な場所を作るというのではなく、自然の声が聞こえたり、人と人との繋がりがあり、個人の考えや感覚を深め、生きる意味を見出すことができる暮らしがある場ということです。SDGsに掲げられている17の目標は、貧困、飢餓、教育、平等、エネルギ―に関するものなど多岐にわたりますが、言い換えるならばまさに、「habitableな条件」を掲げた、そこに向けての行動を求めているものです。この意味において、「平和」や「人が人として生きる権利」の維持・構築のための行動を起こすことができる人の育成が、世界的に今まさに求められています。そして、ICUがリベラルアーツ教育を通して献学以来実践してきた理念の追求は、SDGsに深く関連していると言えるでしょう。
2021年4月には、こうしたICUの学生・教職員が個々に活動していたことを集約し、見える形にすることを目的に、教職員と学生有志のメンバーからなるSDGs推進室を立ち上げました。そうすることで、ICU構成員の誰もがSDGsとどこかで繋がっているという意識をさらに豊かに醸成できると思っています。そして、学生・教職員が学内に留まらず、地域や社会との連携も強めながら一つ一つ取り組みを実践していく、そういう拠点になることを願っています。
人間の本来の在り方は、皆のために、社会のためによい行いをするというものではないでしょうか。現代社会では往々にして忘れられていますが、リベラルアーツが社会に広がっていけば、必然的にこうした意識が醸成され、SDGsの達成がより近づくと信じています。ICUは「明日の大学」とも呼ばれますが、よりよい「明日＝未来」に向けて、社会との連携を深め、行動を加速させていきたいと思っています。
For a Habitable World: Seeking the Essence of Human Existence
The 20th century brought a proliferation of global-scale problems. Structures of exploitation and social disparities emerged as negative effects of capitalism, and it has now become readily apparent that if we all persist on this path of self-interest, our world will soon fall apart. Moreover, technological progress will continue, with AI and other “artificial” technologies spreading even further across the world. Under these conditions, the question that each of us must consider is what we can do to build a society that values the self while respecting each individual, where the happiness of a life free from extreme poverty in a good environment can be shared by all, where we can continue to evolve without being controlled by the artificial and where our creations and the natural world coexist in harmony.
International Christian University (ICU) was founded in 1953 with the mission of cultivating citizens who can contribute to lasting world peace—a mission born out of deep remorse for what happened in World War II. Across almost 70 years since then, our university has continued to pursue this mission through liberal arts education.
Liberal arts education can be seen as a form of intellectual activity conducted with the aim of making the world a better place by cultivating civic-minded individuals with a sense of morality. Another way of putting it is that liberal arts education fosters proactive individuals who seek to do something for others, and who can take action to build and maintain ideals like peace and the right to live with human dignity. At ICU, this approach has produced graduates pursuing all kinds of careers right around the world, including the United Nations and other international organizations, NGOs, and the business and education spheres.
One of the goals I have long cherished is that of “creating places that are ‘habitable’ (where people can live with human dignity).” This does not refer to places that are merely convenient or fulfil people’s dreams, but rather those where the voices of nature can be heard, where people connect with one another and are able to pursue deeper thinking and perception, and discover meaning in their lives. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cover a wide variety of areas including poverty, hunger, education, equality, and energy, but put simply, they set out the conditions for a “habitable” world and call for action toward achieving it. In this sense, the cultivation of people who can take action to build and maintain ideals like peace and the right to live with human dignity is precisely what the world needs right now. There is a close connection between the SDGs and the pursuit of the ideals that ICU has been putting into practice ever since its founding.
In April 2021, we established the SDGs Promotion Office composed of faculty, staff, and student volunteers, with the aim of bringing together and rendering more visible the various activities previously conducted on an individual basis by students, faculty and staff at ICU. I believe that this will enable us to cultivate a stronger awareness among all members of the ICU community that they are connected in some way with the SDGs. I also anticipate that the office will serve as a platform for students, faculty and staff to develop their individual activities not only within ICU, but also through stronger collaboration with the local community and wider society.
Surely the essence of human existence is simply to do good for everyone, and for society. This notion tends to be forgotten in today’s world, but I believe that it will inevitably be rekindled if liberal arts spreads across society, and this will allow us to move closer to achieving the SDGs. ICU is sometimes referred to as “the university of tomorrow.” I hope we can build deeper partnerships with society and accelerate our work toward a better “tomorrow” and a better future.

価値と実践をつなぐ
このたびSDGs推進室長に着任いたしました。岩切学長が述べている「人が人として生きるために：本来の人の在り方を目指して」という理念は、今日ますます切実な課題となっています。気候変動や格差の拡大、さらにはAIをはじめとする先端科学技術の急速な進展がもたらす社会・倫理的課題を前に、私たちは単に課題を知るだけでなく、それらにどのように向き合い、どのような価値にもとづいて選択していくのかを日々問われていると感じています。
こうした課題に向き合う主体として、大学の役割もまた重要性を増しています。近年、大学におけるSDGsへの取り組みは、Times Higher Educationが実施するインパクトランキングなどに見られるように、教育・研究・社会連携・組織運営を横断するかたちで国際的に評価・可視化されつつあります。こうした国際的な動向を一つの参照としながら、国内外の大学との連携を視野に入れつつ、リベラルアーツ教育の理念に根ざした実践をどのように深めていくかを大切にしていきたいと考えています。任期中には、こうした国際的なSDGsの動きとも接続し、本学の取り組みをより広く発信していくことにも取り組んでまいります。
SDGsの17の目標は、それぞれが独立しているのではなく、互いに関係し合いながら成り立っています。そしてそれは、制度や政策だけでなく、私たち一人ひとりの考え方や行動とも深く結びついています。そのため、これらの課題に向き合う際には、多様な価値や立場のあいだで調整や対話が不可欠となります。そのうえでSDGs推進室は、個々の取り組みを支援するだけでなく、その情報や背景にある考え方を国内外に共有し、立場の異なる人々が対話を通じて学び合える場を育んでいきたいと考えています。
本学ではこれまでも、学生・教職員・卒業生がそれぞれの関心から多様な実践を積み重ねてきました。SDGs推進室は、そうした活動をつなぎ、広げ、次の実践へとつなげていくための結び目のような役割を果たしていきたいと思います。授業や研究、課外活動といったさまざまな場での学びが社会との関わりへと開かれていく、そのような循環を支えていければ幸いです。
学内の皆さまとともに考え、ともに試みながら、本学におけるSDGsの取り組みをより豊かなものにしていければと思っております。今後ともどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

Connecting Values and Action
I am pleased to take on the role of Director of the SDGs Promotion Office. The vision articulated by the President Iwakiri—“For a Habitable World: Seeking the Essence of Human Existence”—has become increasingly urgent in today’s world. In the face of climate change, widening inequality, and the rapid advancement of cutting-edge science and technology, including AI, we are called not only to understand these challenges, but also to consider how we respond to them and what values should guide our decisions.
As institutions that engage directly with these challenges, universities are playing an increasingly important role. In recent years, university initiatives related to the SDGs have been increasingly evaluated and made visible on a global scale, as seen in frameworks such as the Impact Rankings conducted by Times Higher Education, which span education, research, community engagement, and institutional practice. While taking such international developments as a point of reference, and building connections with universities both in Japan and abroad, I hope to further deepen practices grounded in the philosophy of liberal arts education. During my term, I also aim to connect our activities with these global SDG movements and to share our initiatives more widely.
The 17 SDGs are not separate goals; they are deeply interconnected. They relate not only to systems and policies, but also to how each of us thinks and acts. Addressing these challenges inevitably requires navigating and negotiating among diverse values and perspectives. In this context, the SDGs Promotion Office seeks not only to support individual initiatives, but also to share the information and underlying ideas behind them both domestically and internationally, and to foster spaces where people from different backgrounds can learn from one another through dialogue. At ICU, students, faculty, staff, and alumni have long engaged in a wide range of initiatives shaped by their own interests and commitments. The SDGs Promotion Office aims to serve as a hub that connects and expands these efforts, linking them to new forms of practice. We hope to support a cycle in which learning across classrooms, research, and extracurricular activities opens outward into engagement with society.
Together with members of our university community, I look forward to thinking, exploring, and taking action with you, and to further enriching SDGs-related initiatives. Thank you very much for your continued support and engagement.

ICUは、グローバルな状況の理解のもとに平和の構築に貢献できる人を育てることを設立の理念としており、リベラルアーツ教育のなかで、SDGs達成のための取り組みはすでにさまざまな形で実践されてきました。その個別の活動をこれまで以上に相互に関連付け、大学の取り組みとしてリベラルアーツのなかにしっかりと統合的に位置付けるために、2021年4月に「SDGs推進室」が設置されました。
2030年に向けたSDGs実現に関わる項目について、教育・研究・社会展開においてインパクトある変革に取り組むこと、大学を構成する学生や教職員だけではなく、同窓生、地域社会や国内外のパートナー機関とも連携した取り組みを進めていくこと、そしてSDGsの17の目標の相互の繋がりや自分との繋がりを自覚して、これらの目標を当たり前と捉え、当たり前に評価し行動できる人材の育成を目指すことをミッションとしています。
ICU's founding principle is to nurture people who can contribute to the building of peace based on a global understanding of the situation, and efforts to achieve the SDGs have already been practiced in various ways in liberal arts education. In April 2021, SDGs Promotion Office was established in order to further interconnect these individual activities and to firmly and integrally position them as university initiatives within the liberal arts.
SDGs Promotion Office is responsible for implementing impactful changes in education, research, and social development with regard to items related to the realization of the SDGs by 2030; and promoting initiatives in collaboration not only with the students, faculty, and staff who make up the university, but also with alumni, local communities, and partner organizations in Japan and overseas. Moreover, our mission is to develop human resources who are aware of the interconnectedness of the 17 goals of the SDGs and their connection to themselves, and who can take these goals for granted, evaluate them as a matter of course, and act on them.

学校法人国際基督教大学（以下、「ICU」と言う）は、キリスト教精神に基づくリベラルアーツ大学として、そのすべての活動においてキャンパス環境への適切な配慮と十全な管理に取り組むことを宣言する。およそ、すべての生命あるものへの慈しみと配慮はクリスチャン・ミッションの根本である。学生を責任ある地球市民として育成することを目標とするICUは、教育こそ、より良い健全な世界を築いていくための最良の手段であると信ずる。かくしてICUは、その日々の教育的営みのなかでの環境への配慮と責任遂行の、実効的統合をめざす。

International Christian University (hereafter ICU), a Christian liberal arts institution, declares its commitment to environmental mindfulness and stewardship in all its activities. The care for creation is fundamental to the mission of Christians everywhere. Moreover, as an educational institution, ICU is committed to the cultivation of responsible global citizens and believes that education is the best means to bring about a better and healthier world. The university seeks to integrate environmental awareness and responsibility into the daily life of the institution. Respect and care for the environment, protection of campus biodiversity, and responsible global citizenship are among the fundamental values that guide university-wide planning and decision-making. All faculty, staff, and students who make up the ICU community should be aware of the way their actions affect the local and global environment in which we live.
ICU is endowed with a campus of extraordinarily natural beauty and cultural heritage. This gift can and should be treasured as one of the unique and appealing assets of the institution.
