Campus Tour with Local Children: Let’s Learn SDGs Efforts at ICU!

三鷹市立第二中学校より、昨年に引き続き、職場訪問の打診があり、今回はSDGs推進室がご依頼承りました。

職場訪問は、第二中学校の二年生が各事業所をまわって、SDGsの取り組みについて学びを深めるという内容だそうです。

SDGsが若い世代に浸透してきているのはうれしい限りですね！

今回、中学生に向けてこんなことご案内致しました。

「ICU SDGsキャンパスツアー」



ICUの自然あふれるキャンパスを歩きながら、環境・平和・ジェンダーについてご紹介していくキャンパスツアーです。

各ロケーションでどんなことをご案内したか少しご紹介いたします。 

Mitaka City 2nd Junior High School requested ICU to accept students’ workplace visit　  as in last year. The SDGs Promotion Office welcomed the students this year.

The aim of the school was to educate second-year students (i.e., eighth graders) on SDGs activities by visiting various workplaces.

Amazing to see how much the SDGs is gaining traction among the younger generation!

Here are some of the activities we, ICU faculty members, carried out with the students.

Campus Tour: Let’s Learn SDGs Efforts at ICU!

Walking around the campus rich with nature, we introduced ICU's activities to address environmental, peace, and gender issues.

The tour took a route from the bus rotary, to dorms, Cafeteria, University Hall, and finally to vegetable fields. 

We’d like to share what we discussed at each stop.

ここでは、ICUの献学をメインにお話しました。

第２次世界大戦の反省から、自由や人権、世界平和に貢献する人材を育てる目的で、寄付により70年前にICUが献学されたこと。

そもそもSDGsの考え方はICUの基盤であることなど、ICUが建てられた目的・歴史を中心にキャンパスを歩きながらご説明。

The dedication of the ICU was mainly explained during the walk.

ICU was established 70 years ago by generous donations, based on the deep remorse of World War II, with the aim of cultivating human resources who would contribute to freedom, human rights, and world peace. 

Students learned the mission and history of ICU, and how the SDGs concept is totally consistent with the ICU's philosophy.

ここでは2017年に建てられた、樅・楓寮について寮の特徴である3点を中心にご紹介。

・森を抜けた風をフロアに流す設計がされていること

・フロアごとの使用電気量の可視化について

・多様なニーズに応えることを目的としたフロアがあること

Here we focused on three features of the Momi and Maple Houses, built in 2017.

In the dorms: 

・Ventilation system to take in outdoor air from the forest and flow indoor air is adopted.

・Electricity consumption on each floor is visualized.

・We have floors to meet diverse needs.

食堂では食に関わることについてＩＣＵが行っている様々な活動についてご紹介しました。

例えば、リリパック。

大学食堂では現在３種類のリリパックが使用されています。これらを学生に使用後回収場所まで持ってきてもらい、種類別に集計し回収しています。このサイクルを徹底することにより、ICUではリリパック回収率が80％を超えています。

他にも、最近行った、
ジビエの周知活動。

ジビエとは、フランス語で、狩猟で捕獲した野生鳥獣の肉や料理のことです。

近年、鹿や猪が増えすぎたことにより、農作物が食べ荒らされたり、生態系への被害など被害額は100億円を超えます。

こういった問題を少しでも周知して、現状を知ってもらうため、ジビエカレーを食堂にてイベント的に提供したり、ジビエの問題についてチラシ配布・掲示物設置を行うことで、学内で少しでもジビエについて興味を持ってくれる学生を増やしていく活動を行った事を説明。

The University Cafeteria offers various food-related activities that ICU is engaged in.

Lillipack, for instance.

In the cafeteria, three types of Lillipacks are currently in use.

After use, students cooperates in bringing them to the recycling area, where Lillipacks are counted and collected by type.

ICU has achieved a recycle rate of more than 80% by fully engaging in this recycling efforts.

Our recent efforts to raise awareness of gibier are another action.

The French word “gibier” describes the food made from wild animals and birds that have been hunted down.

The number of deer and wild boar numbers has grown so significantly in recent years that the harm they have caused, including destroyed crops and ecosystem destruction, exceeds 10 billion yen.

We explained that we have been trying to increase the number of students on campus who are interested in gibier by offering gibier curry as an event in the cafeteria, distributing flyers, and posting notices about it in order to make these issues as widely known as possible and to make people aware of the current situation.

本館では

・この建物自体が中島飛行機の研究所跡だったこと、
・オールジェンダートイレ
・給水機を設置している

事についてご紹介。

オールジェンダートイレは、2020年に設置されたジェンダーフリーのトイレのことです。
簡単に言いますと、入り口は2か所設けていますが、従来の男女別の入り口は設けられてなく、どちらからでも入ることが出来ます。中に入ると個室トイレが連なった構造をしており、個室内に便器、洗面台が設置されていて、個室内ですべてを完結できるようになっています。

性別にこだわらない、ジェンダーフリーな環境作りの一歩として設置した経緯がございます。

また、給水機は「本館に給水機欲しくない？」と言う声のもと、学生が始めたプロジェクトにより設置されました。

給水機を設置することで、

・マイボトルの使用による自販機の消費電力節減

・ペットボトル消費量を減らす

という狙いのもと、本格的にアンケート調査や書類作成を再度行い、理事長、財務理事長に学生から提案し、実現しました。

このような話をしつつ、最後にICU校内にある畑に移動。

In the University Hall, students learned that this building itself was the old site of a research center of Nakajima Aircraft Company. Also, we highlighted the all-gender restrooms and a water dispenser in the University Hall.

All-gender restrooms were established in 2020 at ICU. In brief, although there are two entries, no traditional separate entrances were provided for men and women, and anyone can enter from either side. Once inside the restroom, there are many individual stalls, each with its own washbasin and toilet bowl inside, so that everyone can do everything in privacy.

As a step toward establishing a gender-inclusive environment, all-gender restrooms were created.

The idea for installing the water dispenser came from a student who asked, "Don't you want a water dispenser in the University Hall?" This question started a student-led project, which eventually led to the installation.

The water dispenser in the University Hall achieves to:

- Cut down on the vending machine's electricity usage by encouraging people to bring their own bottles from home.

- Reduce the use of plastic bottles.

With these goals, a thorough survey and documentation were carried out, and the students submitted a suggestion to the President of the Board of the Trustees, which was then realized successfully.

Talking about such things, we finally moved to fields on the ICU campus.

実は、ICUには畑があります。


畑では、落ち葉で作った堆肥と野菜作りを行っている事、環境研究メジャーにおける授業の一環として学生たちが主導するプロジェクト「ICU HONEY PROJECT」が、キャンパス内で養蜂を行い、ハチミツを採取していることのご説明。

今年もICU祭で蜂蜜を出品したところ、大人気で2日間あるうち1日で完売したようです。

すごい大人気！ 

We explained that the ICU students are growing vegetables with compost made from fallen leaves in the field, and that the ICU Honey Project, a student-led project for an Environmental Studies class, is keeping bees on campus and harvesting honey.

When they sold honey at the ICU Festival again this year, it was so popular that it sold out on the first day of the two-day event. 

Many people love it!

生徒さんたちも、ICUのことに興味を持ってくださり、色々質問も受けながら、キャンパス内を歩きました。

学校に戻って、プレゼンをするときに、自分達に何ができるかグループで考えて発表してみては？と中学生たちに提案したところ、「結構、それいい〜」というような反応がありました。

最後には、

「中学生でも参加できるイベントないですか？」

というリクエストも出て、ご案内したこちらとしてもうれしい限りでした。

 こういう地域交流もどんどん深めていきたいですね。

As we walked around campus, the students became more interested in ICU and asked plenty of questions.

We proposed that the students present what they could do for the SDGs themselves when they returned to school to report on this visit in their classes, and the students replied, "That's a great idea!"

After the campus tour is over, students asked,

“Are there any ICU activities open to junior high school students?”

Such a request made us so delighted.

We hope that this kind of regional cooperation will continue to expand.
