Charley Kendall, IJCL President 2025-2026, wrote her senior thesis about Latin in public education. You can read it here.
This thesis explores the issue of whether the Latin language should be incorporated into public school classrooms. Between the cognitive, linguistic, and academic benefits that Latin offers, as well as the accessibility and community aspects that accompany it, Latin is well suited for the public education system. While there are currently many challenges involved in incorporating it into the classroom, there are steps that can be taken to begin revitalizing this so-called dead language. Based on an analysis of published writings, expert input, and original research, this thesis argues that although Latin is often thought to lack modern significance, it contributes greatly to a high-quality education and life and should therefore be incorporated into public school classrooms.

In Defense of Latin
In May 2026, New Albany and Floyd Central high schools were looking to cut Latin, and a number of people spoke at the board meeting Monday night. In fact, the program was so strong at New Albany High School that three of us went on to become Latin teachers, and all of us were part of the group that spoke in its defense. Steve Perkins pulled together parts of a school board meeting that were the testimonies on its behalf. The video is not great because it was a streamed event using a camera that was rather far away from the speakers, but please share it.
