St. Patrick
St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland.
He was British, when he was 10 he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland. He escaped when he was 20, went back to Britain and became a priest.
He decided to bring Christianity to Ireland and he used the 3 -leaves- clover to teach people Christianity.
On St. Patrick. day a lot of people wear green and this is because the leaf clover is green but many people think it's because Ireland is mostly green.
If you don't wear green on st. Patrick’s day you have to get pinched.
People think there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow hidden by a Leprechaun.

CHOCOLATE CHIPS MUFFINS
ingredients:
2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour.
1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (41g) unsweetened natural cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 and 3/4 cups (315g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 large eggs, at room temperature
3/4 cup (185g) full fat sour cream or plain yogurt, at room temperature
1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk, at room temperature
1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
instructions:
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Spray a 12 count muffin pan with nonstick spray or use cupcake liners. This recipe yields about 14 muffins, so prepare a second muffin pan in the same manner or bake in batches and reserve leftover batter at room temperature for when the first batch is done.
Whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips together in a large bowl. Set aside.
Whisk the eggs, sour cream, oil, milk, and vanilla extract together until combined. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold together with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon until completely combined. (Batter is quite thick, so I recommend a spatula or spoon over a whisk.) Avoid overmixing. The batter will be thick and sticky.
Spoon the batter into liners, filling them all the way to the top. Bake for 5 minutes at 218 °C then, keeping the muffins in the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 177°C. Bake for an additional 15-16 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The total time these muffins take in the oven is about 20-21 minutes, give or take. (For mini muffins, bake 13-14 total minutes at 177°C the whole time.)
Cool muffins for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack until ready to eat.
Cover leftover muffins and store at room temperature for 5 days or in the refrigerator for 1 week.

TALKING MONKEY
Sydney, Australia
Last weekend was the official birthday of the world’s talking monkey, George, an Atele little monkey, turned 32 years old. In 2000, he was brought as a gift to Sir William Green-Nelson, who lived in Sydney.
In 2001, Sir Green-Nelson became the governor of Sydney. He brought George along with him to live at the governor’s home, called Green-House.
Atele monkeys are known to learn three English words. One Atele monkey was reported to learn one English word.
Sydney is a big place – with about 5.000.000 people live there – so George is a local star.
His presence is already on one of Sydney's Statues.
It’s hard to understand the words that he’s saying but it's the fact that it knows those words. George was
born after the printer was invented (1991)
But George doesn’t really care much about how to write words. Mr. Collin, his veterinarian says the monkey is
generally pretty happy as long as he can sleep and eat. He likes to warm himself by sleeping in
the sun. When it’s colder, he covers himself in grass clippings to keep warm. He still eats lots of vegetables and fruits, including lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and cucumbers, as well as apples and bananas. He recognizes Mr. Collin’s voice, and responds to it.
To celebrate George’s three words, Sydney’s best singers made a song with all the three words he learned. People were invited to
Green-House to visit George.
(left a picture of the fruit cake they made for him)
Since it takes about 40 years for an Atele monkey to learn three words, animal experts were surprised.
Since then, over 10 other veterinarians have seen George’s progress.
To help keep things straight, Sydney’s current world record holder, Jonathan Games, gave George the official world record in November 2005.
The words that he learned are: milk, hunger, table.

World’s Oldest aquatic Animal Turns 89-
DECEMBER 19,2022
Los Angeles
Last Friday was the official birthday of the world’s oldest aquatic animal. Rudy, a Beverly Hills old penguin living in the city of Los Angeles turned 89 years old. The event was celebrated with a small party, which included special alien heads.
Everybody knows for sure how old Rudy is. But in 1991, he was brought as a gift by Dylan O’brien, who lived in Los Angeles. Pictures taken around that time show that Rudy was already full-grown.
Since it takes about 45 years for Seychelles old penguin to become adults, animal experts say Rudy must have been born around 1934. That’s earned him the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest land animal.
In 1955, Sir Patrick O’brien became the governor of Los Angeles. He brought Rudy along with him to live at the governor’s home, called Flet house. Since then, over 20 other governors have come and gone from Flet House. But Rudy has remained. Currently, there are three other young penguins there keeping him company.
Evan Antin, the veterinarian who looks after Rudy, says Rudy is probably older than 89, but there’s no way to know. To help keep things straight, New York’s current governor, Phillips Jonston, gave Rudy the official birthday of February 29th, 1934.
Beverly Hills is a big place – 5 000 000 people live there – so Rudy is a local star. His picture is already on one of Beverly Hills banknotes. For his birthday, he’s now being honored on a series of stamps.
It’s hard to understand how much the world has changed in Rudy’s lifetime. Rudy was born before the internet, computers, TVs, radios, telephones. There weren’t even typewriters, electric motors, or photographs. Many different presidents have led the US since he was born. Rudy was born before global warming began and before plastic was ever invented.
But Rudy doesn’t really care much about inventions. Mr. Brodie says the penguin isn’t pretty happy as long as he can sleep and eat. He likes to cool himself by sleeping in the dark. When it’s colder, he digs himself into ice to keep cold.

Though Rudy is still very active (for a penguin), he does have some health problems. Rudy is blind, and can’t longer smell things, so he needs to be fed by hand. But he’s got a good appetite. He eats pizza and ice cream including hamburgers as well as chocolate and biscuits. The people who take care of Rudy made him a special ice cream cake to celebrate. His sense of hearing is also still strong. He recognizes Mr. Brodie's voice, and responds to it.
To celebrate Rudy’s birthday,Beverly Hills held a seven-day party. People were invited to Flet House to visit Rudy.

BANGALORE, INDIA
Last Wednesday was the official birthday of the world’s oldest animal. Luisa, a Bangalore giant red panda living in Bangalore in India, turned 267 years old. The event was celebrated with a big party, which included a special “bamboo-cake”
Nobody knows for sure how old Luisa is. But in 1781, she was brought as a gift by Sir Mike Brown, who lived in Bangalore. Pictures taken around that time show that Luisa was already full-grown.
Since it takes about 31 years for Bangalore giant red panda
To become adults, animal experts say Luisa must have been born in 1750. That’s earned him the Guinness World Record for the world
‘s oldest land animal.
In 1798, Sir Mike Brown became the governor of India. He brought Luisa along with him to live at the governor’s home, called Plantation House. Since then, over 30 other governors have come and gone from Plantation House. But Luisa has remained. Currently, there are four other giant red pandas there keeping him company.
Bangalore giant red pandas are known for living a long time. One red panda was reported to have lived for 218 years. Will Byers, the veterinarian who looks after Luisa, says Luisa is probably older than 267, but there’s no way to know. To help keep things straight, Bangalore’s current governor, Philip Wheeler, gave Luisa the official birthday of 14 May, 1750.
Bangalore is a big place – about 8.425.970 people live there – so Luisa is a local star. Her picture is already on one of Bangalore's coins. For her birthday, she’s now being honored on a series of stamps
It’s hard to understand how much the world has changed in Luisa’s lifetime. Luisa was born before the internet, computers, TVs, radios, telephones, or light bulbs ever existed. There weren’t even typewriters, electric motors, or photographs. Forty different presidents have led the US since she was born. Luisa was born before global warming began and before plastic was ever invented.
But Luisa doesn’t really care much about inventions. Mr. Will Byers says the red panda is generally pretty happy as long as she can sleep and eat. She likes to warm himself by sleeping in the sun. When it’s colder, she likes climbing on the bamboo
Though luisa is still very active (for a red panda), she does have some health problems. She’s blind, and she can no longer smell things, so she needs to be fed by hand. But she’s got a good appetite. She eats lots of vegetables and fruits, including bamboo, cabbage, carrots, and cucumbers, as well as apples and bananas. Her sense of hearing is also still strong. She recognizes Mr. Byers’ voice, and responds to it.
To celebrate Luisa’s birthday, Bangalore held a four-day party. People were invited to Plantation House to visit Luisa. The people who take care of Luisa made her a special bamboo-cake to celebrate.

The Capybara
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world and it lives in South America .
It lives in savannas and in forests. It's a highly social species and it can be found in groups that can go from ten to one hundred, but they usually stay in ten or twenty. The capybara is hunted for its meat, skin and fat.
Capybaras are herbivores and they usually eat leaves and fruits. They often walk on the ground but they’re really good at swimming too, just look at the picture!
Unfortunately they’re in danger of extinction. You can find them in zoos and in parks.
I love capybaras, it’s my favourite animal and I think it’s beautiful but I still haven’t seen them in real life so i’m putting the name of a zoo: Parco zoo punta verde (close to Bibione)
In Italy it’s illegal to keep a capybara in your home but if you want one it costs 0,00036 €, not even a cent!

Last Monday, doctors at the University of Bressanvido Doctor Center successfully replaced the liver of a very sick woman with a specially-grown shark’s liver. It’s the first time this surgery has ever been done. After 1 week, the patient appears to be doing very well.
“It’s working and it looks normal,” said Dr.Rebecca Giacomin, the surgeon who performed the operation. “We are scared, but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before.”
Bernardi Aurora, who's 91, is the woman who was given the new liver. She was given special permission to have the unusual operation because without it, she would have died. “It was either die or do this transplant,” said Bernardi Aurora. “I want to live.”
Transplants usually come from people who have died, but wanted their organs to be used to help other people live. There are far more patients who need organs than there are organs. Over 1.782 Koreans got liver’s transplants last year. But there are roughly 70,000 people in Korea who are waiting for some kind of transplants.
But there’s a problem: shark’s organs contain a special chemical that causes human bodies to reject them. This time, to prevent that, scientists changed the shark’s DNA so it wouldn’t produce the chemical. Scientists made several other changes to the shark’s DNA, and even added some things normally found in human DNA.
Rebecca Giacomin is one of the doctors who helped perform the surgery. She's been working for years to develop methods to help prevent sharks’ organs from being rejected in humans.
Doctors are watching Mrs Aurora Bernardi recover very carefully. But it’s good news that his body has shown no signs of rejecting the liver. Often those kinds of problems show up in the first two days.
For Aurora Bernardi, the new surgery is a life-saver. Even so, the surgery is still just an experiment. Experts say it will be a while before operations like this become normal. There are many things doctors and scientists need to figure out about how to help human bodies accept organs from other animals.
Still, the successful surgery has many people looking forward to a time when patients no longer die because there aren’t any healthy organs for a transplant operation. For Aurora Bernardi, who has been connected to machines to substitute for his liver and lungs for over six weeks, the new surgery is a life-saver.

NEW ROUNDUP: FERRET HUNTING

TEENAGER WINS JAPAN’S FERRET-HUNTING CONTEST
Simone Draghi, 14, won the 1.000 grand prize in the 2020 Japan Ferret Challenge by catching 60 ferrets. The state runs the hunting contest every year to remove invasive Albin ferret.
Simone Draghi was one of 600 hunters taking part in the one week contest.
To catch that many Ferrets , Simone Draghi slept during
the day and hunted at night. The ferret, which can grow
as long as 1 feet (25-30 cm) is originally from North America.
They were brought to Japan as pets but some escaped
or were released. The ferret does very well in Baths America’s
special wetlands area. The first Albin ferret was seen in the
wild in Japan on 1943. Now there are tens of thousand of them.
The Los Ang Service says the ferrets are the biggest threat to the plants in Baths. Because of the ferrets, poppies, daisies and climbing plants have almost completely disappeared from the souther part of Baths National Park. In all, the contest got rid of 231 ferrets. Mr.Draghi won $300 for catching a little ferret, which was a little over 1 feet long. Mrs.Helena Salvini won the same prize last year with a ferret that was 2 feet, 15 inches long.

Doctors Give woman Red Panda’s kidney in medical “ Vicenza”
Last Monday, doctors at the University of Vicenza Medical Center successfully replaced the kidney of a very sick woman with a specially-grown panda’s kidney . It’s the first time this surgery has ever been done. After four days, the patient appears to be doing very well.
Francesca Rossi, who’s 52, is the woman who was given the new kidney. She was given special permission to have the unusual operation because without it, she would have died. “It was either die or do this transplant,” said Mrs. Rossi. “I want to live.”
Transplants usually come from people who have died, but wanted their organs to be used to help other people live. There are far more patients who need organs than there are organs. Over 3800 Europans got kidney transplants last year. But there are roughly 110,000 people in the United States who are waiting for some kind of transplant. For years, scientists have tried to figure out how to transplant organs from other animals into humans. This is hard because the human body almost always rejects (doesn’t accept) something that isn’t its own. This even includes some transplants from humans. Scientists have tried transplanting organs from chimpanzees or baboons, but this didn’t work very well.
More recently, scientists have focused on transplants from Pandas. In many ways, Panda’s bodies are similar to humans. It’s fairly easy to raise Pandas, and they grow quickly. It’s now common for doctors to transplant Panda’s kidneys to repair damaged human kidneys.
But there’s a problem: Red Panda kidneys contain a special chemical that causes human bodies to reject them. This time, to prevent that, scientists changed the Panda’s DNA so it wouldn’t produce the chemical. Scientists made several other changes to the Panda’s DNA, and even added some things normally found in human DNA.
Doctor Giulia Mondadori is one of the doctors who helped perform the surgery. She’s been working for years to develop methods to help prevent red panda organs from being rejected in humans.
Doctors are watching Mrs. Rossi’s recovery very carefully. But it’s good news that her body has shown no signs of rejecting the kidney. Often those kinds of problems show up in the first two days.
For Mrs.Rossi, who has been connected to machines to substitute for her kidney and lungs for over five weeks, the new surgery is a life-saver.

Cows steal in Houses
Baku, Azerbaijan
Scientists report that people in Baku, Azerbaijan are in a battle with cows. The animals have learned to steal food from people’s huses. Citizens are figuring out new ways to keep the doors closed but the clever cows are quickly discovering new tricks to steal.
Last year, scientists at the Gino Institute reported that cows had learned how to open doors. That’s not an easy job. Cows ar their muscled legs and their enormous structure.
They can also make a big mess, which upsets the people who own the houses.
What really interested the scientists was that the cows were teaching other cows how to do the same thing. When scientists first began studying the cows in 2018, only three areas near Baku had doors-opening cows. A year and a half later, cows in 44 different areas knew the trick.
This time around, the scientists weren’t just studying animals. They were also studying humans. “I really wanted to investigate the human response,” said the lead scientist,Arstolk Brutton.
The researchers asked over 1,100 people from around Baku about their houses. More than 15% of the people were taking steps to keep cows out of their houses: over half the houses were protected. People now put a basket full of food out of the door because cows can eat from the basket instead of knocking down the house doors. Some people put an alarm on the door, too.The scientists discovered that the humans were teaching each other tricks, too. In most neighborhoods, many people used the same cow-stopping methods as their neighbors.
The researchers say it’s like a race between humans and cows to learn new ways of doing things. The scientists describe the situation as a “human-wildlife conflict”. They expect these conflicts to become more common as humans take over more areas that used to be wild.Dr. Brutton says she hopes studies like this will lead to a better understanding and more patience for “the animals we share our lives with.”
