Dear ICS Elementary Families,
Adding Up to Something New: Introducing Our Latest Math Program
As we step into another school year, we at ICS are grateful for the privilege of partnering with your family. Each new school year brings fresh opportunities for our children to grow—not only in faith, but also in wisdom and virtue.
This year, we are thrilled to introduce a wonderful, mastery-focused math curriculum based on the Singapore Math framework. World-recognized as one of the best math approaches in the world, students taught with this framework have consistently scored number one on international TIMSS and PISA assessments. For P1, our program is called Earlybird Kindergarten, and for Grades 1 to 5, the program is called My Pals Are Here!. We know that anytime a school introduces a new curriculum, parents naturally have questions. You might wonder, “Will this feel totally different from how I learned math?” or “How can I best support my child at home?” We want to encourage you right from the start: this program is a thoughtful, proven, and deeply rewarding way to help your children thrive. Here is why we are so excited about this journey together, and how the program will bless your child’s learning!
Building Mastery, Grade by Grade
Have you ever watched a master builder construct a spiral staircase? They don't jump straight to the top floor; they anchor every step around a central axis, returning to that main support as they reach new heights.
That is the exact philosophy behind our new math curriculum. Rather than covering a topic once, checking it off, and rushing forward, our program uses a spiraled learning approach. Core mathematical concepts are revisited across every grade level—each time at a deeper level of complexity to ensure true, long-term mastery.
For example, addition isn't treated as a one-time unit. Students might first explore single-digit addition in P1, master it in Grade 1, spiral back to apply those concepts to multi-digit place values in Grade 2, and later return to the same underlying principles when tackling decimals and pre-algebra. By continuously returning to foundational ideas as your child's mind matures, each grade level reinforces past learning while building higher-level competence. The result is a rock-solid mathematical foundation where every child achieves mastery with total confidence.
Learning the Way God Designed Our Minds
Educational research—pioneered by psychologist Jerome Bruner—shows that whenever any of us encounter a brand-new concept, our minds naturally process it through three distinct stages: Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract (CPA). This isn't just a pattern for young children; it is how humans of all ages best absorb and master new ideas.
Think about how anyone learns to assemble a complex piece of machinery:
Concrete Stage: First, you physically hold the real parts in your hands to see how they feel and connect.
Pictorial Stage: Next, you consult a visual diagram or schematic that shows how the pieces relate to one another.
Abstract Stage: Finally, once you understand the model, you can read and write the formulas, symbols, or code behind it.
Both Earlybird Kindergarten and My Pals Are Here! follow this exact learning pathway for every math concept.
Instead of asking children to memorize abstract formulas right away, teachers begin with hands-on materials like blocks and counters (Concrete). Next, students learn to draw visual diagrams—called Bar Models—to represent problems (Pictorial). Ultimately, our goal is for students to connect these visual representations to numbers and equations (Abstract).
Bar modeling is one of the most exciting tools your child will learn! By turning complex word problems into clear visual drawings, students can see relationships between numbers effortlessly. It turns math into a rewarding puzzle, building creative problem-solving skills and visual thinking that will serve them for a lifetime.
Balancing Traditional Fluency with Deep Understanding
Some parents worry that modern math programs replace classic skill-building, but we want to reassure you: procedural accuracy and math facts are fully preserved! Standard arithmetic, multiplication tables, and computational speed are still vital parts of our daily instruction.
The beauty of this framework is that it bridges traditional skill with deep conceptual understanding. Our goal is for children to know not just how to solve a problem, but why the answer makes sense. By engaging their reasoning and curiosity, we are helping students cultivate perseverance, critical thinking, and a positive "can-do" attitude toward learning.
Partnering with You in Faith and Joy
Scripture encourages us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). Helping our children develop strong, capable minds is a powerful form of stewardship.
As we begin this new chapter, remember that you are not on this journey alone! We are here to support you with resources, parent guides, and open doors. We invite you to celebrate your child’s progress, embrace the visual tools they bring home, and pray with us for a fruitful, joy-filled school year.
Blessings,
Marlon Ng, Ed. D.
