Peepoople is a project under IAS Kenya that mainly deals with sanitation and creates awareness on water and hygiene. Its main operations take place in schools and is reaching approximately 12,236 school going children in 63 schools in the Kibera slum in Nairobi county, Kenya.
The Peepoo is a self-sanitizing single use biodegradable toilet. It contains urea which when in contact with human waste or urine forms ammonia which is toxic and kills pathogens found in this waste matter. PeePoos are collected and taken to designated drop-points located in Kibera. For 4-6 weeks, the Peepoos incubate in a sanitization yard, before use in agriculture as a fertilizer which creates high yields for farmers in rural Kenya. The programme has become an anchor of reach within the wider community in Kibera.
