The thematic areas of IAS Kenya can be divided into five main categories;
a) Intergrated Water Resource Management (IWRM): Promote the efficient development and management of natural resources to meet the basic and livelihood needs of the target communities. IWRM is a broad-based approach and includes a wide range of activities mainly in the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.
b) Inclusive Education (IE): Ensuring equal access and sustained provision of quality learning opportunities for children with barriers to learning.
c) Resilience & Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR): IAS Kenya takes a deliberate effort to contribute to environmental stewardship and helps the communities develop resilience towards shocks and stresses in their own environment.
d) Civil Society Development (CSD): Building the capacity of the local organisation and organised communities to be advocates for the least privileged while aiming at strengthening their participation in humanitarian interventions, poverty reduction and sustainable development initiatives.
e) Humanitarian Intervention: Providing material or logistical assistance to a group of people in need of aid during man-made disasters, natural disasters, conflicts, violence, poverty etc.
f) Mainstreaming Cross-cutting Issues: To ensure cross-cutting issues such as disability, gender mainstreaming, gender-based violence (GBVs), HIV/A IDS, FGM, protection of human rights, cancer awareness etc are addressed throughout the project cycle.
The strategic plan of IAS Kenya 2020-2024 outlines the organisation's blueprint for the five-year period commencing January 2020 to December 2024. It comes at a critical time when IAS and other NGOs are facing challenges when it comes to donor trends and priorities. The development of this strategic plan is substantially informed by extensive consultations with the board, staff and partners in offering guidance towards the crystallisation of the vision; a world where communities are empowered to live dignified lives.
The overall goal of the organisation's strategic plan is a sustainable organisation transforming communities in Kenya.
The organisation identified three strategic goals to be pursued in the planned period. These are the following:
1. Improved quality and sustainability of programmes and expansion to at least three new countries in the next five years.
2. A self-sufficient and sustainable IAS Kenya by 2025.
3. An effective and efficiently governed and managed organisation.
The implementation of the five-year strategic plan will be through annual work plans and quarterly plans on both operational and departmental level. The effectiveness and achievement of the various planned activities will be assessed periodically through meetings, monitoring visits and annual reviews among other monitoring and evaluation methods.
The successful implementation of this strategic plan will depend on the commitment and performance of the management team and staff at an individual level and collectively. Additionally, the organisation has an effective board of governance, supportive and committed departments, qualified management personnel and intensive capacity building for the staff, to address the changes and sustainable approaches recommended herein. There are clear structures that define roles and responsibilities, teamwork at all levels in the structure, positive relationship with partners and work towards sustainability. Overall, financial resources will be mobilised to ensure that the strategic plan is implemented successfully at all levels.
Lastly, the IAS Kenya strategic plan 2020-2024 draws inspiration from Jeremiah 29:11:
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." - ESV
