With funds from the Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF), IAS Kenya responded to the needs of the Nanighi and Chewele communities in Tana North sub-county and Tana River county in the aftermath of destructive floods that happened in Kenya in March - May 2018.
The Tana River county was among the most affected counties. The Chewele and Nanighi communities who had settled near the river banks had their houses submerged, animals died and household Non-Food Items (NFI) got carried away and was destroyed by water. In addition, crops were destroyed and farms silted. The communities were hit by water borne diseases such as cholera and pneumonia to mention but a few.
IAS-K was able to intervene by distributing sanitary pads, food, farm tools, seeds and fertilizers to set them up for 6 months as well as provide access to clean safe water. The action was made for a community of 1,245 households with 3,735 people.
