The Development Cooperation Intervention project is sponsored by the Swedish Mission Council (SMC) and addresses the issue of draught. IAS Kenya has worked in Tharaka south for over 10 years and due to the recurring drought in Tharaka in general, IAS Kenya saw it fit to move to Tharaka North. IAS Kenya focuses on building the capacity of a local community-based organization Kianda Cereal Producers through improved farming methods, training and provision of farming tools to create earth dams. The earth dams harvest rainwater so as to be used for irrigation during the dry season.
The intervention contributes towards achieving sustainable management of natural resources in order to develop resilience and improve livelihoods. Special focus is placed on supporting and enhancing democratic processes through advocacy at the grassroots level as aspired by Kenya’s vision 2030.
