Spring Term 2026
This inquiry explores the impact of World War Two on Britain, with a focus on the local community of Ferndale. Through historical investigation, literacy, outdoor learning, and cross-curricular activities, pupils develop an understanding of how the war affected everyday life and shaped the experiences of children and families.
The unit begins with an engaging hook, The Mysterious Suitcase, encouraging pupils to infer, question, and hypothesise about the past. Pupils then explore what WW2 was and how the conflict reached and influenced Ferndale, using timelines and primary and secondary sources to situate their learning chronologically.
Pupils investigate key aspects of wartime Britain, including blackouts, air raids, and local bomb shelters. Literacy tasks such as writing evacuee letters help pupils empathise with displaced children, while a rationing activity develops mathematical and problem-solving skills through experience of limited resources.
The inquiry examines Ferndale’s community and its role in supporting the national war effort. Pupils also analyse propaganda to understand persuasive techniques and their historical significance.
