Autumn Term Inquiry
This inquiry explores the wonders of the natural world, with a focus on seasonal changes and the weather we experience in the UK. Through hands-on exploration, observation, and creative tasks, children will investigate the skies above and the changes happening in nature around them. Children will begin their learning with a nature’s treasure walk, using their senses to spot signs of the season. They will look closely at trees, plants, and clouds, responding to questions about what they see. On their walk, they will collect natural items like pinecones, twigs, and leaves to examine and talk about back in class, using digital photographs to record what they find along the way. As the inquiry unfolds, children will learn about the different types of weather through videos, stories, and discussion. They will begin to understand how weather affects their daily lives, as well as the world around them. They will recall their own experiences of different weather conditions and write simple sentences or draw pictures to describe them. Children will explore extreme weather, comparing it to the weather they are used to, and begin to recognise how each season brings changes to the sky, land, and living things. Through these engaging activities, they will develop observation, language, and reasoning skills, while building a growing curiosity and respect for the natural world around them. By the end of the term, children will have developed a clearer understanding of seasonal change, weather patterns, and how to describe the world they see each day.
Spring Term Inquiry
To begin this inquiry we will be focusing on the history of school.
When was our school built? What was here before? Explore these questions and more in this special project about your school and its history.
In this project, children will explore:
• the history of their school how the school has changed over the years
• the school’s place in the community
• how to look after the school and its environment
• the school’s ethos, rules and routines
After half term we will explore our local community.
Let’s learn about our local community, looking at houses old and new and finding out how our streets have changed since our mums and dads were young. Perhaps your granny or grandpa went to your school or maybe they worked in the baker’s shop? Make maps and plans of the streets around us, planning our routes. What can you see? What can we find? Whereabouts do you live? Do you know your address? Find out how to write instructions, directions, adverts and learn rhymes all about our community from different times. When the Lord Mayor writes and asks us to help make our street a better place, it’s time to get your thinking caps on and paintbrushes at the ready. Ready to roll, Street Detectives? Get your clipboards and cameras – it’s time to start investigating!
We will be asking ourselves the question-
"Would I rather live in Ferndale now or in the past?"
