Summer Term 2025 - Expressive Arts
The Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts came to work with us to create a school mural.
We set the children a challenge of using their research skills to find out who Rhiannon Roberts is and why she might be visiting us.
What is an illustrator?
We have been working with author and illustrator Sarah Phelps. We have written a story called 'Benjamin the Superhero.' We worked collaboratively to create illustrations for the book.
Our illustrations of the characters.
Welsh Literature mini inquiry - Spring Term 2025
Tales from Wales
After listening to the story of 'The lake of the Lake' we visited Darren park Lake and reenacted the story.
Welsh author Sarah Phelps came to visit us.
She read us some of her favourite stories she had written and we asked her lots of questions about becoming an author.
Benjamin was desperate for a story of his own so when Sarah went home at lunch time, she wrote a story all about Benjamin and sent it to us by home time.
She has challenged us to illustrate the story!
Can we become illustrators?
Spring Term 2025 - Humanities
What is my place in history?
This inquiry looked at the children's memories of their childhoods and how they fit into their family tree. How far back in history can we find out about? We used our families to find out more. What happened in the year we were born? The children found out about historically significant people who have had a major impact in Ferndale/Wales/the world. They learned to use timelines, stories and historical sources to find out about the people and use historical models to explore their significance. They compared the places that people are from and how geography has played a part in their life.
Louby Lou storytellers started off our inquiry by taking us on a trip around Wales meeting significant characters such as; Owain Glyndwr, King Arthur, St David and Roald Dahl.
We created our own family trees
We found out about us when we were babies.
We researched information about significant people from Wales and created a timeline.
We wanted to find out about Gyto Nyth Bran. We researched him using lots of different sources and then created a presentation to share with our families.
Enterprise mini inquiry
'Change Pennies into Pounds'
This inquiry gives pupils the opportunity to become enterprising, creative contributors by developing their creativity, problem-solving skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Giving pupils real-world experiences by bringing an idea to life, letting them experience the thrill of running a business by developing relationships, creativity and organisation.
Developing literacy and numeracy skills in a fun environment!
The children followed the business process through from start to finish – making choices about what they will create and coming to an agreement, asking for money (investment), working out the cost of making the product and how much to sell it for, advertising the product, selling the product, working out the profit after paying the initial investment back.

Autumn Term 2024 - Science and Technology
What's on the Beach?
This inquiry explored the seaside and the wonderful animals and plants in their micro-habitats. We visited Southerndown Beach and explored the rockpools and the seashore, collected waste to protect the animals and created sea art. The children have investigated beach zones, including foreshore, backshore, splash zone and dunes and the living and non living objects that can be found. They have compared Ferndale to Southerndown investigating the differences between our town and a coastal town. We used our digital skills to email Newton primary school to ask them about their experiences of going to school at the beach. Fact files and a presentation at the end of our inquiry shows how much we have learnt.
