Important information
Our class PE sessions are every Wednesday. Rather than the children bringing in a PE kit to keep in school please would you send your child in a PE kit for this day only. This could be leggings or jogging bottoms with suitable footwear for physical activity.
We will be providing a healthy snack daily- the cost of this will be £1 per week. We will be providing milk each day at snack time. All children must bring a reusable water bottle with their name on it to drink from and refill throughout the day.
School dinners are free for all year 1 and year 2 pupils as part of the universal free school meal offer.
Summer Term
Our Class Inquiry- Does curiosity power creativity?
Curiosity is an integral element of creativity. Pupils will learn through this inquiry that expressive arts take form through many different mediums and that exploration and experimentation is an important part of the creative process. Sometimes creating art and making mixtures can be magical and we will explore this inquiry through texts like 'Winnie the Witch' and 'George's Marvellous Medicine'. We will investigate colours, how they are made and a range of art mediums and resources before focusing in on specific artists and their work. To end the inquiry, the children will create their own art gallery to showcase their creative work from the inquiry and plan an opening event for parents!
We were lucky enough to have the famous Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts visit us to start our inquiry! We collaborated with her to create a mural for our school hall, where we suggested ideas and all had a go of painting with her. The final mural turned out brilliantly and will have pride of place very soon!
Spring Term
Our Class Inquiry- Where do stories come from?
Children will have the opportunity to explore literature written by Welsh authors and traditional stories from Wales- we will read and become familiar with several different stories and tales, some of which the children will work on in further detail. These will include Bedd Gelert, the Afanc, The Red Dragon of Wales, the Lady of the Lake, Rhitta Gawr, Myfanwy of Dinas Brân, the Legend of Black Bart. This will provide pupils with an understanding of Welsh culture and Cynefin, and specifically the impact of myths and legends on this. The pupils will be able to meet an author in person and ask questions to clarify and demonstrate their understanding of the texts they have read as a class. We will be working on responding to texts in different ways, retelling stories and developing our ability to empathise with characters in the stories we read.
We started this inquiry by watching a special performance of 'Tales From Wales' in our school hall- this was a dramatic retelling of traditional Welsh myths and legends and it caught the children's imagination! Afterwards, we reflected on the performance and shared our opinions about it.
A local author called Sarah Phelps came to visit us and the children were able to ask their questions to her about being an author and illustrator. The children enjoyed listening to her reading her stories and she even read a brand new unpublished story especially for us!
Our Class Inquiry- What makes memories magical?
This term Ladybirds are taking a trip down memory lane. Can you remember being small? Being a baby and learning to crawl? Do you recall a favourite toy, maybe a teddy bear or a favourite book? Look back at family photos of special occasions, perhaps holiday snapshots or a birthday or two. Remember a wedding or a christening and find a funny photo of your parents when they were young. Learn how to write a diary of days gone by and find out about the days before you were born: it’s called history and it’s all about the past. Then make a special box, a memory box, to keep special things safe. In years to come, you can revisit them and remember how you looked when you were young. Memories are special. Let’s make some more.
Autumn Term
Our Class Inquiry- Who lives in the woods?
This term in Ladybirds Class will be investigating 'Who lives in the woods?' If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a BIG surprise. Foxes and badgers, voles and mice, beady eyed owls in the swaying treetops. Beneath the leaves are tiny footprints – animal or imp? You decide. Deciduous or evergreen? Can you match a leaf to its tree? Can you match a petal to its flower? Let’s build a den, stick by stick and branch by branch. Or we could make a teeny tiny home for a woodland fairy. Then let’s party down in the woods with Mr Fox and all his woodland friends. We’d better not get lost. Let’s leave a trail of conkers as we go. At last, it’s time to rest by the woodland fire, listening to stories and toasting our sweet, gooey marshmallows. Yum, yum.
