The 'Hook'

Every school will have its own ‘hook’, which can be derived from the schools’ unique sense of ‘cynefin’. The ‘hook’ provides the starting point which can ignite and fuel a shared commitment to the school’s curriculum, ensuring that all staff and all learners are engaged and emotionally connected to its development.

Key Principles

  • The ‘hook’ is the basis for the curriculum in each school and reflects its social, cultural, linguistic and economic identity.

  • The ‘hook’ should support all learners to realise the four purposes.

  • The ‘hook’ should develop a greater sense of belonging, responsibility and respect for all learners’ local, national and global environments.

  • Schools will use the ‘hook’ to develop their curriculum which will include the skills, knowledge and experiences required for deep learning.

  • The ‘hook’ should reflect the multi-disciplinary approach to learning and allow for varied and wide ranging contexts in order to support engagement for all.

Key considerations:

  1. How do we use the ‘hook’ to design a curriculum which reflects the local, national and international contexts unique to our school?

  2. How do we use our unique context to make connections in learning across and between AoLEs?

  3. Do we as school leaders, teachers and governors, have an agreed understanding of the social, cultural, linguistic and economic landscape of our school and its community?

  4. How does this understanding form the foundation for our ambitions and aspirations for all the learners in our school?

  5. How can we ensure that all learners develop a personal and collective sense of identity which will enable them to contribute with confidence to their community and beyond?
