In this research article, by authors Karlsson and Lundstrom, explain the importance of researching mental health based knowledge in the social work profession. ADHD is a growing psychiatric diagnosis within young children and youth. ADHD most common features are impulsiveness, inattentiveness, and hyperactivity. The authors highlight how social workers are essential components to conduct research on ADHD to understand how to meet clients' needs and differentiate the difference between diagnosis and medication procedures. Focusing on the social work practice lens in the Swedish child welfare system. However, there is no significant data to compare to what is practiced in the U.S child welfare system.
Your Thoughts on Substance Use in Humboldt

The Humboldt Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention along with the collaboration with Substance use Prevention Program created a survey in the spring of 2019. A limited number of residents of Humboldt County participated in the survey where many expressed their concerns on the exposure of drugs to youth. ACE’s or adverse childhood experiences were brought to attention including generational trauma. Asking for programs to raise awareness on the effects of drugs and alcohol and ways to prevent consumption. Humboldt Allies for Substance Abuse prevention gathered information through the survey on alcohol or other drug use and substance use prevention in the community.
Addressing concerns from ACE’s, mental health, alternative activities for youth and accessing treatment for substance abuse are few of the common themes the community wishes to see change and access to. Evidence-based was included when gathering information. About 50% of adult participants were asked about drug or alcohol use and responses were prominent on asking for access to drug and alcohol prevention programs. Humboldt ASAP encourages further feedback from other community members who identify LGBTQ+. Many parents or guardians shared they wish to see more drug prevention programs in local schools.
