OPCs are harm reduction facilities that drug users may access to consume independently acquired substances in an environment where sterile supplies are provided and trained professionals are on site to provide emergency aid in the event of an overdose. Along with supplies and safe places to use, OPCs also provide individuals with access to recovery services and resources. The US has seen an alarming increase in death caused by opioid overdose over the last several years due to the infiltration of potent opioids such as fentanyl and carfentanil into the US black market drug supply. This report demonstrates that OPCs provide an incredibly effective service for reducing rates of opioid overdose, supporting recovery, and reducing bloodborne illness.
