Kennedy’s Critter Chronicle
December 1, 2023
Please start checking Class Dojo daily. It is the FIRST way I communicate with you!
Reading: Our skill for this session is theme. We have been working on this in s few different ways. They have to infer sometimes to figure the theme out. Most of the Critters are doing pretty well with it. Our reading skill test will be next Friday, December 8.
Vocabulary: Our vocabulary skill this go round is analogies. The Critters are getting really good at these. Some of them can make up their own now! Test will be the same day as reading.
Spelling: This week's spelling words all have an r influenced vowel sound in them. The Critters will be writing their first 5 spelling words in cursive this time. The test will be given on Friday, December 1. Next week our words have three letter blends at the beginnings.
Grammar: Our grammar skill for this testing period is singular and plural nouns. We are having a bit of trouble on words where they need to change y to an i before adding es. Test day will be the same as the reading.
Writing: We are currently working on opinion paragraphs. It has a been a slow process, especially since I was out for a bit. We will get them done by the end of the quarter.
Math: We are now working on forms of numbers. These include standard form, word form and expanded form. Our math test for Topic 8 will be given sometime before the end of the quarter. The Critters will be taking their timed multiplication test several more times before the end of the quarter, to try to get the best score they can. I will record the highest score they receive.
Science: Our science topics are now learning about climate, clouds and severe weather situations. Today we learned about the lightning rod and built a small-scale model. Please ask your Critter how it works! Next week we will be building levees and emergency storm shelters. We will test the levees to see how long they can hold back water. We will test the shelters by trying to blow them down with the leaf blower with them in it!
Social Studies: We are now learning about Missouri facts and our region within the United States. Next, we will learn about the regions of our country and what happens there.
Handwriting: We are nearly finished with the uppercase letters! We have a few to go, then I teach the Critters to write their names in cursive!
STEM: Our emergency shelters will be our next STEM project. The teams will have to use only the given materials to build a shelter that 3 people can fit in. I will try to "blow their house down" with a leaf blower, while they are in it. It is usually an hysterical event, so I will take some video and put it on Class Dojo for you to enjoy.
Special Note: Please see the letter about the Christmas party.
