Absences: Please call or email me to let me know your Critter will not be at school. A call to the office is requested too.
Art: Third grade students go to art once a week, as part of our specials rotation for 50 minutes. Our art teacher is Shelia Schneider.
Assignments: Every assignment is important and will be completed and turned in.
Attendance: Students who come to school daily get better grades in school. Please make every effort to get your child to school every day.
Birthdays: Students may bring treats to share with the class for a birthday. The treats must be store bought. Students also receive a small gift and certificate from the teacher.
Books: As a rule, I do not send home our reading and math books. Information needed for assignments will be provided to take home.
Book Bags: Students should bring a book bag or backpack to school DAILY. They will have things to transport to and from school.
Book Order Forms: I will send home a set of book orders monthly, throughout the school year. You do not need to purchase anything. However, ALL purchases allow the class to get new books and learning games for our classroom.
Character Education: Students will be learning about topics like honesty, perseverance, responsibility, and friendship. We will be doing class activities to reinforce these concepts.
Chromebooks: Students will need to bring their CHARGED Chromebook to school DAILY. We will do some kind of work on them everyday. The Critters daily work will also be listed on the Google drive for you and them to see what we are doing that day.
Class Dojo: Our classroom will be using the online program called Class Dojo to track our daily classroom behavior and to communicate with parents. Please see the sign-up sheet provided at Open House. It is a great way to keep track of how your child behaves at school, as well as what is happening in our classroom throughout the year. I add photos of school activities (field trips, assemblies, etc.) frequently. It also has a component that allows parents and teachers to message each other.
Class Shirts: We will be ordering class shirts prior to the end of 1st quarter. I will send information and order forms at that time.
Communication: Please feel free to communicate with me at any time. You can write a note, text, send an email, and phone me. Please DO NOT message me on Google Classroom. Others can see that. I will get back to you as soon as possible. Contact information is under the school contacts tab on our web page.
Computer Use: We are now a one-to-one Chromebook class. Please review, sign and return the computer usage form provided.
Conferences: I will be having at least one conference with parents around the end of first quarter. If you have concerns and would like a conference, contact me. As things come up, there may be more.
Critter of the Week: Throughout the school year, students are chosen for their good works to be our "Critter of the Week." They will write a short report about themselves and the animal that represents them. They will also be awarded a certificate.
Cursive Writing: Students learn to write in cursive in third grade. We must first review printing letter formation and spacing. We should start cursive instruction before Halloween.
Desks: We have desks in our classroom that are small. Please do not send binders, extra folders, pencil boxes, etc. We do not have room for them.
Differentiation: Students in Room 20 are taught based on their instructional level, whether it be introductory or mastery. All students may not have the same assignments, or even the same homework.
Discipline: Please read, sign and return the "classroom rules" sheet provided. For instances not covered, action will follow district policy.
English: In third grade, we learn about punctuation, types of words, sentences, and word tenses.
Field Trips: My class usually takes one "official" field trip and several other "walking" field trips. More information as the time for field trips comes.
Fish Basket and Tickets: Kennedy's Critters have the opportunity to earn "Fish Tickets" during the school day. These can be earned for things like; doing the right thing, staying on task, helping someone without being asked, etc. When a student receives a fish ticket, they will write their name on it and place it in the "Fish Basket." On Fridays, I will draw one or more names from the basket. These students will receive a special prize or privilege. Examples of prizes or privileges are things like a sweet treat, getting to eat lunch in the classroom to watch a short movie, or getting 10 extra minutes of recess.
Graded Papers: Papers that show a "plus sign and number" on them have been applied to the grade book. Papers showing just a "minus" number have not been entered in the grade book.
Grading Scale: Room 20 follows the grading scale set by the District, shown on the district website.
Handwriting: Legible writing is important, whether it is printing or cursive. We will review form and spacing of printed letters before we begin learning cursive.
Homework: Homework is important and serves a purpose. Students will generally have 30 minutes of choice reading toward their goal and some type of math activity every night. Homework assignments will be labeled as such on our daily planner page, and will be shown in magenta under the "Homework" label on our planner page. Homework assignments will not be graded by percentage.
Homework Heroes: Homework Heroes are students who complete and return their homework on time. We have a chart that keeps track of homework turned in. For every 5 times in a row students return homework as they should, they will get to pick a piece of candy out of the glass pumpkin. For every 10 times in a row homework is returned, students get to choose an item from the treasure chest. Returned homework will be checked before recess.
Independent Reading: Students will be responsible for independent reading activities daily. There will be time set aside for independent reading everyday. Students will be required to accumulate a set number of book points as a goal, from reading books within their individual range. For each book they read, they will complete a response page or a short quiz. Students who reach their given book total each quarter will receive a special "Kennedy's Critters" privilege, such as a trip to Casey's, and an Elementary Building provided privilege of some kind per quarter. Watch for more information about your Critter's reading levels and goals in the first few weeks of school.
Individuals: Each student is unique and will be treated as such.
Information: Information will come home in the form of Class Dojo messages, notes and weekly newsletters. These should be brought home in the take home folder I have provided for your Critter. Information is also always available on our classroom website.
Journals: Each student will be given their own journal for reflective and free writing. We will also be writing in science journals this year. We will write in them daily most days.
Kennedy's Critters: Our class is known as "Kennedy's Critters." Our classroom is called the Critter Cage. Each student will choose an animal or insect to represent them for the school year. The animal they choose will be used for a variety of purposes throughout the year.
Leaving Early: If your child will be leaving school early, please send me a note, so I can prepare homework and other materials they will need to take home.
Library: Our librarian is Kaitlin Portell. We will go to the library as one of our specials this year. I will let you know what day our class will go and for how long books can be checked out.
Lunch: Elementary students have a daily 25 minute lunch period. Our lunch time will be from 11:40to 12:05. A school lunch menu should come home just prior to a new month beginning.
Make-up Work: Students have the same number of days they were absent to complete and turn in work.
Manners: Students need to use common manners while at school. These will be EXPECTED in Room 20.
Math: Elementary students continue the same math program they began in the Primary. There are some differences. Students will have some type of math activity/homework DAILY. I will add resources to the planner pages and our website to help explain, practice and master specific skills.
Menus: New lunch menus will come home at the end of the current month for the following month.
Morning Routine: We have a set routine for getting our school day started. We will be reviewing this routine daily for the first few weeks.
Music: We will have music once a week, as part of our specials rotation, for 50 minutes. Our music teacher is Amy Smith.
Newsletter: I will be sending home a newsletter, "Kennedy's Critter Chronicle," every Friday. The very same information will be available on the website under the "Classroom News" tab.
Office: Notes about transportation changes, absences, etc., must be sent to the office. Please remember to sign and date any correspondence.
Parents: Parents and teachers need to be a "team" to help students reach their full potential. Please contact me anytime you have a concern, problem or question about things going on at school, or home.
Physical Education: We will have PE once a week, as part of our specials rotation, for 50 minutes. Our PE teacher is Casey Speed.
Planner Pages: The Critters will be working from a Google classroom planner page daily. Videos, slide presentations and other work used during the school day will be attached to this page. If your student needs to review, it will be available. It will also show you what your Critter's homework is for the night.
Principal: We have 2 administrators at the Elementary. Mr. Detweiler (Principal) can be reached by calling 789-0000, ext. 4003. Mr. Jacquot (Vice-Principal) can be reached by calling 789-0000, ext. 4004.
Projects: Kennedy's Critters will be doing many individual and group projects during the school year. A few of them require parental help at home. I try to put as many of them as possible on our classroom dojo page. They will be under the "stories" tab on Dojo. Check the site frequently, I add content constantly.
Quiet: Quiet is expected during direct instruction, tests, instructional films, and during independent reading time.
Quizzes: Our quizzes will never be "pop" quizzes. My students will know in advance when they will have quizzes and tests. Study guides will usually be sent home prior to any testing and will cover exactly what is on the test.
Reading: Our reading block will look different this year. I will send a document about this at a later date explaining the new processes. Tests will have a cover sheet showing what skills were tested, along with the student's scores. I form small groups for reading skill improvement from these results.
Recess: We have two daily 25 minute outdoor (weather permitting) recesses. Please dress children appropriately for this activity. Also, please do not send any equipment from home. It tends to get broken or lost, then students are upset.
Report Cards: Report cards are filled out eight times a year. Parents get a mid-quarter report, as well as a quarter report for each of the four quarters. All of these reports will be available on the parent portal.
Responsibility: This trait is stressed in third grade. Please help your child develop a good sense of responsibility by ensuring homework is completed, items are returned to school on time, etc.
Retesting: Room 20 has a retesting policy. Any grade below a 70% will be retested during recess, after "re-teaching/review" work has been completed. A letter will go home to parents prior to any retesting. This does not include spelling tests.
Science: In third grade, we have new topics like; motion and forces, electricity and magnetism, weather, climate, life cycles and traits, adaptations and survival, and fossil evidence.
Sign and Return Papers: If your child brings home a "sign & return" paper, please review it, sign it, and send it back to school with your child. I do keep track of what comes back and what doesn't.
SmartBoard: Our classroom has an inter-active SmartBoard that is used daily for instruction, games, and educational videos.
Snacks: We will be having "snack time" sometime during the school day. We will try a few different times the first few weeks to see what works best. Snacks need to be healthy foods. Please do not send candy.
Social Studies: Our topics in Social Studies have changed for this school year. We will be studying some about Missouri history and geography, types of maps, communities, government, economics and other things.
Spelling: Each new story or lesson has a new set of spelling words. Students will be provided with two spelling lists each week. One stays at school. The other is sent home on the first day of the new story or lesson for studying purposes. Each lesson's list words have a common attribute. We will work with our spelling words daily.
STEM/STEAM: Our class will be engaging in many STEM/STEAM projects in our classroom this year. STEM/STEAM projects include the use and exploration of science, technology, engineering, art and math.
Supplies: Our supplies in Room 20 are community property. Please don't send extras, as they will be sent back home.
Take Home Folders: I give your child a two-pocket folder to take home graded papers and information. Please check it nightly and remove notes and graded papers. It should be brought to and from school and home every day.
Tardies: If your student arrives after the first bell, they must be signed in at the office to receive a tardy slip.
Tests: Tests will always be announced before happening. We have tests in all subjects in third grade. A study guide with test content will go home prior to any test, with the exception of reading. Any test score below a 70% will be sent home as a sign and return paper. NOTE: Third graders take the state MAP test in the spring.
Toys: Please do not allow toys to come to school with your student. They will be confiscated and returned when an adult retrieves them. Things get lost, stolen or broken and students get upset.
Transportation: If you have to change transportation arrangements for your student, please send a dated note to school with your child. Changes should be made as soon as possible in the day. A note needs to be sent for each occurrence.
Tutoring: If your child is having trouble with math or reading, I may send them to our tutors during the school day. We may also have access to before or after school during the year. More information as I get it.

Visiting: Visitors are always welcome. However, it is better to let me know when you might be coming. Some activities are better with less distraction. Also, we are not yet sure of the "visitor" policy for this year. I will let you know when we find out.
Vocabulary: Each new story or lesson has a new vocabulary words. If they become lost, you can print a copy from our website. The vocabulary words are located on the page with the story's title.
Website: Our classroom website is a great place to find information about our school, our classroom, assignments, homework, etc. Our math and reading resources are very helpful. Many websites are listed for skills practice at home. We also put many projects and photos on our website. Check the site often, because we add things all the time!
Writing: Writing is very important in third grade. We have to learn how to write super sentences and solid paragraphs. We will be learning how to write effective narratives, descriptive paragraphs, compare and contrast passages, persuasive paragraphs, and argumentative/opinion papers. We will be writing DAILY!
