Wild Animals in Their Habitats

We viewed Gary Fleming's book, Wild Animal ABCs. As a class, we brainstormed different types of habitats that animals lived in and looked at pictures of animals. We drew our animals within their habitats using a Sharpie to make the outlines and then learned about watercolor washes to color our illustrations.

Drawings Inspired by Jean DuBuffet
We looked at a few of Jean Dubuffet's paintings and sculptures. We made our drawings using Sharpie to make irregular shapes that were connected. Dubuffet often colored a few of his irregular shapes solidly red or blue or by using red or blue stripes. We colored some of our shapes the same way. Some of the kindergartners made their pictures to look like objects, and others were exploring patterns in his style.

Winter Trees
Branches are patterns found in trees, but we also looked a photos of branched rivers, lightning, antlers, coral, and veins. In this pattern there are stems, from which branches appear. The branches have smaller branches of their own, and then even those branches have branches.
