"Story Telling in Pictographs"

We began our year inspired by the character Little Gopher in the story "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush", as retold by Tomie dePaola. Our First Grade Artists told their stories of home, family and friends in the style of Native American Hide Painting or Pictograph, using markers, thread and feathers.

"Messengers of God"

Preparing for the Christmas season, our lesson centered around the action of angels. The Messengers of God are very busy in the Infancy Narratives of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The focus of our artwork was Luke 2:13 "And suddenly there was a multitude of heavenly host with the Angel praising God and saying 'Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.'"

"Beautiful Landscapes"

With the coming of the season of Spring we turned our attention outdoors finding inspiration in the work of great American landscape artists like Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt. Identifying the horizontal lines in those works the students began to create their own landscapes in tempera paint.
