Our lesson began with a trip outdoors to observe trees. We examined the bark for color and texture. We looked at the structure of trunk, limbs, and branches. We observed the exposed roots and changing leaves and discussed the weight and mass of the trees. Assembling our supplies of black crayon for drawing and oil crayons for color and texture our Second Grade Artists created impressions of their observations. With a touch of paint for leaves their masterpieces were complete!

Our Christmas artwork focused on the Holy Family. The students looked at the actions of the Holy Family in the Gospels of Saints Matthew and Luke. The students identified qualities that their families could imitate. They observed historical portraits for composition ideas. After drawing their portraits of the Holy Family they used watercolor paint to enhance their designs.

Winter brings dreams of snow days and snow play! The Second Grade Artists, working in oil crayon, change basic shapes into implied form using shade and shadow. Glitter snowflakes complete the snowy scene.
