Gratitude Portraits
Third Grade Artists were asked to choose one person for whom they are especially grateful, someone in their life who loves and cares for them unconditionally. After practicing basic portrait drawing the students began, with the medium of their choice, to create a work of art to honor a loved one completing their work with a gratitude statement.

Parfleche
Our lesson inspiration was the artwork of Native Americans living on the North Plains. The Parfleche is a raw hide carrying case for food, clothing and household tools.

Churches in Starlight
Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" was used as an Advent meditation. Third Grade Artists were asked to imagine the painting as a sleepy little town unaware that all creation was rejoicing at the coming birth of Jesus Christ, with the town's church steeple pointing our eyes to the heavenly celebration. After viewing some photos of church architecture, students designed their churches and set them against an oil crayon resist background.
