Another school year comes to an end and we prepare to say good-bye to the Eight Grade Class. These artists have been asked many times to draw themselves throughout their elementary school years. So for one final time they have been asked to create a self-portrait along with a descriptive piece of word art. Working from home, our Eight Grade Artists submitted their final art assignment. These works of art reflect bright, beautiful, and confident young people ready to take on their next educational challenge.

Harnessing color is always a challenge for the artist. Using a monochromatic palette our Eight Grade Artists rose to the challenge to recreate the compositions of the Great Masters using tints, shades and tones in a cool palette.

"Winter Count" is a calendar of historical recording of tribal events found among the Lakota Native Americans of the Great Plains. After viewing several resources, the Eight Grade Artists were asked to reflect upon their personal or family histories. Creating a symbolic language and using materials in imitation of Native American style , they were asked to tell their own stories.

Art and Social Studies go hand in hand for this project. We looked at the work of America's foremost Regionalist painter, Grant Wood. We compared the work he produced throughout the 1930s to the historical events of the day. Focusing on Wood's most famous work "American Gothic", the students embarked on a graphing challenge to enlarge the image composition and remake the work into their own style. Due to Covid-19 closure, the project was not complete but some student artists were off to a great start.
