The focus of this lesson was the art of map making called Cartography. Fifth Grade Artists were given the assignment to create a theme, brainstorm vocabulary, and begin to design a map. Their maps needed to contain title, border, compass rose, symbols and an optional map legend.

Our lesson focused on geometric designs found in Native American Culture. Radial, concentric, and symmetrical designs were highlighted. The art of creating an image from small parts such as stones or glass tiles know as Mosaic was discussed. The artists of Fifth Grade were given a variety of natural materials and their assignment was to create a piece of jewelry.

In preparation for this project, Fifth Grade Artists spent time drawing from real life. After several sketches the students used brush and black ink to draw their vase and blossoms from memory. The following week the students worked in watercolor carefully considering a palette to complete their works of art.
