*This event is only for HIS community members and is not open to the public.
Volunteers Needed:
The PTA is looking for volunteers for the Spring Bazaar. Spontaneous volunteers are always welcome but it will be helpful if you could let us know in advance for better organizing.
Volunteers are needed for the following duties:
- Organizing/sorting of donated goods (starting next week during school hours)
- Setting up (on the 19th, starting 13:00)
- PTA vending booth / Bake sale & coffee/tea sale / Games (TBD) (on the 19th, 14:00 - 17:00)
- BBQ grill masters (on the 19th 15:00 - 16:45)
I don't know too many people at school... I don't speak Japanese... Don't worry, that's why we have this event! If you are interested, please contact us at: pta.sapporo@gmail.com
Spring Bazaar Donations:
Items for sale
If you have some items that you’d like to get rid of, but are not planning on having your own vending space at the bazaar, please consider a donation to the PTA.
A donation box will be placed at the front entrance of the school.
Look for the big red caged trolley and the Spring Bazaar Donations sign.
- Clothes: New or gently used, without stain or damage. Please bring only the items you would buy if they are sold. Please make sure that you wash and iron them before bringing.
- NO STUFFED ANIMALS
- Any other items must be new or in mint condition.
* All proceeds from sales go to PTA fund to support students’ learning and enjoyment of school life.
Bake sale
Home baked or store bought items (NO NUTS PLEASE). Items can be brought with the students in the morning on the 19th (donation box at the entrance) or to the bake sale table after 14:00
Vendor Information:
Vendors can participate in the flea market to sell used or new goods - clothes, toys, books, handicrafts, etc.
A vendor space costs 500 yen and measures approximately 2 x 1.5 meters
If you will be fundraising for a worthy cause, the space will be FREE. However, please contact the PTA to reserve the space.

Vendor space positions are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis - hurry up and register!!!

ボランティアを募集しています
PTAではスプリングバザーのお手伝いをしてくださる方を募集しています。当日お手伝いのお声がけをいただくのも大歓迎ですが、よりよい準備するためにも事前にご連絡をいただけると助かります。
以下のお仕事のボランティアが必要です
寄付してもらったものの整理、仕分け（来週、8時半から15時半の間）
設営（19日、13時から）
PTAの販売ブース、ベイクセール＆ホットドリンク、ゲーム（予定）（19日、14時から17時）
BBQ grillで調理してくださる方 (19日、15時から16時45分）
知っている人があまりいない、英語に自信がない、という方でも大丈夫ですし、大歓迎です！興味のある方は、pta.sapporo@gmail.comまでご連絡ください（日本語で大丈夫です）。

販売するもの
ご家庭で不要になったもので、ご自身の販売スペースでの販売をされないものはぜひ、PTAに寄付してください。
玄関に寄付用の箱を設置してあります。
スプリングバザードネーションと書いてある、赤い大きなカートを探してください。
衣類：新品もしくは、シミやダメージのない、きれいなもの。売られていたら買いたい、と思うようなものをのみをお持ちください。洗濯してアイロンをかけてからお願いします。
ぬいぐるみは受け付けていません
それ以外のものは、新品もしくは綺麗な状態のものをお願いします
売上は全て、学生の学びや学校生活をより豊かなものにするために使われるPTA基金になります。
ベイクセール
手作り、もしくは市販のもの（ナッツなしのものをお願いします）。19日の朝、お子さんに持たせていただいてもいいですし（玄関に寄付箱を用意します）、14時以降に校庭の売り場までお持ちいただいても大丈夫です。
販売スペース
フリーマーケットの販売スペースで、新品、ユーズドの衣類、おもちゃ、本、手工芸品などの販売ができます。
販売スペースは、だいたい２x1.5mの大きさで500円です。
もし、ファンドレイジングや慈善事業などへの寄付の目的での販売の場合は無料ですが、場所の確保のためにPTAにご連絡ください。
場所の予約は、pta.sapporo@gmail.comまでメールで、もしくは011-816-5000まで電話でご連絡ください。
販売スペースは、早い者勝ちですので、お急ぎを！

Today’s highest temperature is expected to be 11 degree, which is exceptionally high for February.
Please be careful walking (snow/ice/icicle falling from roof or signals, deep puddles) and driving (getting stuck in the melting snow, splashing water to pedestrian).
Drivers, it will be helpful to have "stuck helpers" (plastic plates to slide under the tires when the car get stuck. You can find them in Homac, Viva Home, etc.) and safer to avoid taking little backstreets (more risk of getting stuck). (In Sapporo, passer-by will usually come and help you get stuck.) Melted snow will freeze in the morning and in the evening, so be extra careful even when the roads might look dry.
Spring is not so far away... so, it's time to think of events for spring!! Next meeting is on March 8th from 15:45-

歩く時（屋根や信号からの落雪、氷柱や氷、深い水溜り）や運転する時（スタックや水溜りの水を撥ねさせないように）に注意してください。
運転される方は、スタックヘルパー（プラスチックの板状のもので、車がスタックした時にタイヤの下に敷くもの。ホーマックやビバホームなどで買えます。）を車に載せておくと便利です。また、裏道は避けた方が安全です。(札幌では、スタックした場合でも大抵、通りすがりの人が助けてくれます。）道路が乾燥してきれいそうに見えても凍っていることがありますので、気温の下がる朝晩は十分ご注意ください。
春はそう遠くなさそうです。。ということは、春のイベントのことを考えないと！！次のミーティングは、3月8日 15時45分からです。

Fall Festival Profit
Our sincere apologies for having taken such a long time to calculate them, but here are the final figures!
The total profit raised from the event is 238,458 yen (Raffle: 93,532 yen, Food and drink Booths: 144,926 yen)

Winter Celebration thank you!
It was nice for our community to get together and to have an afternoon filled with music. Thank you Mr. Sugino, Ms. Yong and Mr. Oshima. A big thank you also goes to Mr. Katayama.
PTA has prepared goodie bags for the students and coffee for the parents/guardians. It would have been difficult to prepare so many bags of sweets without extra hands and your support for PTA volunteer works is much appreciated. We hope to have more events in spring and stay tuned for more details of how you can help PTA.

音楽でいっぱいの午後をコミュニティーの皆さんと共に過ごすことができて、楽しかったですね。杉野先生、ヨン先生、大島先生、ありがとうございました。片山さんにもありがとうございます。
PTAからは学生のためにお菓子と飲み物の詰め合わせ、保護者のためにはコーヒーを用意しました。たくさんのお菓子を用意するためにはお手伝いなくしては無理でした。PTAのボランティア活動のご協力に感謝します。春にはもっと多くのイベントができるといいと思います。どのようにPTAのお手伝いができるは、またご連絡しますのでお楽しみに！

Teachers & Staff Appreciation Day!
Teachers & Staff Appreciation Day!
HIS PTA organizes Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day a couple of times a year. It is a way to show our appreciation for the teachers and staff, by preparing snacks or lunch with drinks. To show the support from parents/guardians, HIS PTA Sapporo will be organizing Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day on December 6th.
Before Covid, we organized appreciation day with potluck and it was very much appreciated. Out of precaution against Covid, we will be ordering lunch using the PTA fund to the restaurants for take-out this time. If you know a good restaurant for takeout (about 900 yen per person), please let us know by Tuesday, the 29th. We will make an order form with different options and the teachers and the staff will order what they wish to have for lunch on the 6th. If you would like make the day even more special with donations of store-bought, individually packed sweets, snacks, fruits, drinks, or flowers, your contribution will be much appreciated. We tend to have a lot of sweets, so if you hesitate between sweets or savory, please choose the latter. Holiday season items will be a plus, but not a must. A donation box will be prepared at the entrance in the morning on the 6th. You can ask your child/ren to bring the items directly to 206, where the venue takes place. If you are a parent/guadian who lives away from Sapporo, you can send the items to the school address. For this time, please refrain from bringing home-cooked/baked goods, items that need to be served. If you would like to help on the day to serve and great the teachers and staff, please contact pta.sapporo@gmail.com

Teachers & Staff Appreciation Day (先生と職員感謝の日)！
HIS PTAは年に数回、Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day (先生と職員感謝の日）を企画しています。お菓子やお昼ごはん、飲み物などの準備をして、先生と職員の皆さんに感謝の気持ちを伝えるイベントです。私たちからの応援として、先生と職員感謝の日を12月6日に行いたいと思います。
コロナウィルス以前は、手作りのものの持ち寄りで感謝の日を実施してとても喜ばれていました。今回はコロナ感染対策として、PTA基金から持ち帰りのできるレストランにお昼の注文をしようと思います。一人あたり900円くらいで持ち帰りのできるおいしいレストランをもしご存知でしたら、29日の火曜日までにご連絡をいただけたらと思います。いろいろと選べるような注文用紙を作って、先生と職員の皆さんそれぞれに、6日のお昼に食べたいものを選んでいただきます。感謝の日をより特別なものにしたいと思われる方は、市販の、個包装がされているお菓子、スナック、果物、飲み物、お花などの寄付、大歓迎です。甘いものをいただくことが多いので、甘いものとしょっぱいものどちらかで迷われたらしょっぱいものをお願いします。年末年始のイベントっぽいアイテムも歓迎ですが、必須ではありません。寄付用の箱を６日の朝、玄関に設置します。お子さんに会場の206教室までお持ちいただいても大丈夫です。遠方にお住まいの保護者の方は、学校に直接お送りいただいてもOKです。今回は、手作りのもの、取り分けが必要なものはご遠慮ください。当日のお手伝いをお願いできる方がいらっしゃいましたら、pta.sapporo@gmail.comまでご連絡ください。

For tomorrow,
- If you can, please come by public transportation.
- If you are coming by car, please park your car at the parking of Takadai Elementary School (please see attached photo).
Parking duty teacher will be at the parking starting from 9am.
Please follow their instructions.
- Only the volunteers who need to prepare for the booth, can come at 9:00. Otherwise, please come after 10:00 or at your assigned time.
- We are looking for volunteers who can help between 12:00-13:00

How to set up on the 4th:
Starting from 2pm, setting up start in the gym (for PTA, the students will be setting up at various locations).
For Food booth: Tables will be brought up to the gym. Please cover the tables with colored paper (provided by the school). Please make signs for the items to be sold and their price (number of tickets). Please help with the booth(s) you will be helping on Saturday. If there are enough hands, please help with other booths or Trick or Treat on the 2nd floor. Please do not use Scotch tape on the painted wall (the paint will come off) and use masking tape instead.

フードブース：テーブルはジムに運ばれてきます。テーブルに模造紙（学校にあります）でカバーをかけます。販売予定のアイテムと価格（チケットの枚数）を書いたものを作ってください。ヴィーガン対応の商品がある場合は、わかりやすく書いてください。5日にお手伝い予定のブースでの作業をお願いします。もし、手が足りているようでしたら、別のブースか２階のトリックオアトリートのお手伝いをお願いします。セロテープをペンキ塗りの壁に使用しないようにお願いします（ペンキが剥がれます）。代わりにマスキングテープをご使用ください。

Question about the tickets for Fall Festival: Tickets!
フォールフェスティバルに関する質問：チケット！
Raffle ticket has two sides , one says "Ticket" and the other says "Keep this ticket"and it’s sold for 100 yen /ticket.
When you purchase, please write your name, phone number and age (it is mandatory to pick up alcoholic drink prize) on the back of “ticket” side.
Please put the "ticket" side in the box and you will need to keep “Keep this coupon” side.
You will need to have this coupon, in case you win a prize.
It can be purchased at the office until Friday and it will be sold only on the 4th floor on Saturday.
ラッフルチケットには、"Ticket"側と”Keep this coupon"側があり、1枚100円です。
買った後に、”Ticket"側の裏にお名前、電話番号と年齢（アルコール飲料を受け取るには必須です）を書いてください。
“Ticket”側を箱の中に入れて、”Keep this coupon”はお持ちください。
景品が当たった場合には、受け取りのために必要です。
金曜日まではオフィスで、土曜日には、４階でのみ販売します。

RAFFLE TICKETS ON SALE!!!
100 yen each and you can win, Go Pro 10, 10,000 yen Amazon card, Apple card, Nintendo card, Baskin Robbins ice cream voucher, Book card, Yogibo bean bag chair, toys, whisky, champagne, wine, coffee drip bags.
Tickets can be purchased at the office. No change please.
Today is the last day for raffle prize and Trick or Treat sweets donation.
Raffle prize can be left at the office but please contact pta.sapporo@gmail.com in advance, so that office can be informed.
Fall Festival Preparation Fun is today, from 14:00 on the 2nd floor.
Please be sure to check your temperature and sign in at the office. Please bring scissors and stapler.

We have PTA meeting tomorrow from 15:45 in MPR and we will be mainly talking about Fall Festival. Please join us!
Fall Festival Preparation Fun: We will be having various preparation works for Fall Festival on Wednesday 2nd from 14:00 on the 2nd floor. If you can come, please be sure to check the temperature and to sign in at the office. If you have scissors and staplers, please bring them.
Volunteer works for the day before and on the day of the event will be communicated by tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you to all who have donated Trick or Treat sweets and raffle prizes!
We continue to collect donations of:
-Trick or Treat sweets
Donation box is located at the entrance
We have students with Nuts, Milk, Egg, Wheat, Apple, Peach, Cherry, Kiwi, Fish and Honey allergy and also students who are vegan. While it will be hard to be perfect, it will be a good learning experience to go shopping with your child/ren and look for something which everyone can enjoy. If you have purchased sweets with some of allergen, please don’t worry. We will be happy to have your donation and please put them in the donation box. Thank you for helping HIS to be more inclusive community!
Donation will be accepted until Wednesday next week.

We have already wonderful prizes but it’s always more fun to have more winners! If you are considering donation, please contact pta.sapporo@gmail.com
It can be anything you or your child wants to have, can be dinner vouchers, concert tickets, toy, furniture, product or voucher of your business etc.
In order not to make the prize drawing time too long, we would appreciate if you could consider one big item instead of several small ones.

We have many volunteers signed up already but in order to allow everyone to have fun with the family and/or friends, we would love to have more help!
Middle school and high school students will be organizing activities and it will be a nice opportunity for you to see what your child does for the community.
If you cannot join on the day or the day before, you can also support us with the donation of bottled drinks, sweets for trick or treat, raffle prize!

中高生は、アクティビティの企画をしていて、お子さんがコミュニティのためにどのようなことをしているのかを見る良いチャンスです。

We are looking for the volunteers for Fall Festival on November 5th. There are various date, time frame and ways to support! Please join us for this fun event for the community. You can sign up from this link: https://forms.gle/sXGM8AsYodsbciwF7
It is not allowed to play in the field or the playground after school by the school rule.

There are some parents/guardians who are misunderstanding that it is okay to play until 4pm, but we would like to remind you to leave the school ground after picking up your child at 3:30pm. There has been problem with interruption with the after school activity and toys left in the fields after use. If you or your child/ren wish to talk or play, we would like to ask you to go to the park or elsewhere other than school ground. Thank you for your understanding.

4時までなら遊んでいいと勘違いされている方がいらっしゃるようですが、3時半の下校時間に玄関でお子さんをピックアップされた後は速やかにご帰宅ください。放課後のアクティビティへの支障、遊具の出しっ放しなどで迷惑しています。お友達と遊んだり、お話しされたい方は公園など学校以外の場所でお願います。ご理解とご協力をお願いします。
またお話に夢中になって、お子さんから目を離すことのないようご注意ください。玄関前に限らず、車通りが多いので大変危険です。チェーンやポールなど、皆さんの安全のために設置されている備品で遊んだり、破損したりすることのないよう、お願いします。

We are planning to have Fall Festival on November 5th (open only to the HIS community). There might be changes or cancellation depending on the situation with Covid. Save the date and stay tuned for more details.

There are a lot of cars passing between the school and the dorm building during drop off and pick up time. Crossing guard has been very helpful in assuring the safety of the students. If you have 15 minutes in the morning and/or in the afternoon, please contact pta.sapporo@gmail.com It will be a great help if you could help only once a week or a couple of times in a month. Your child/ren will be in the school building or with the bus duty teachers while you work as a crossing guard.

登下校時に、多くの車が校舎と寮の間を通ります。クロッシングガードは、学生の安全を守るためにとても重要です。もし、朝と午後（もしくは、どちらか）の15分間、お時間があるようでしたらpta.sapporo@gmail.comまでご連絡ください。週に1日だけ、月に何度かだけでも大丈夫です。クロッシングガードのお仕事をしてくださっている間、お子さんは校内、もしくはバス担当の先生と一緒にいられますので、ご安心ください。

We will be having a community event for the teachers, staff, parents and guardians to get together. Student council will be organizing activities for elementary students and HS/MS band will be performing. Snack and refreshment will be provided by the PTA. Please join us!

先生、職員と保護者で集まるためのコミュニティイベントを開催します。生徒会が小学生のためのアクティビティを企画してくれて、中高生のバンドが音楽を演奏してくれます。お菓子と飲み物はPTAで準備します。是非お越しください。

Unfortunately, the meeting has been changed to via Zoom and from 12:30. Let's hope that things will be better for our last meeting of the school year in June!
All the parents/guardians and teachers are welcome. You can join after the meeting starts and leave before the end. Please join us!

The space in front of MPR is reserved for the school bus in the morning. If there is a car parked there, the bus will need to park at different place. It will be dangerous for both the bus riders and other students.
Parking on the sidewalk is against the Act of Traffic. There are students not only from HIS but also from the neighboring schools at both drop off and pick up time. Please be kind not to park on the sidewalk, especially in front of the new dorm building and against the wall of the Takadai elementary school.

PTA has various volunteer works, such as Crossing guards (15 min. drop off/pick up time), Gardening (Tuesdays and Thursdays for 30-60 min.), Costumes and Props (can be done at home). It is a wonderful way to get to know other parents and guardian! If you are interested in helping, please contact pta.sapporo@gmail.com

MPR前のスペースは、バスの下車専用のスペースです。もし、そこに車が止まっているいると、バスは別の場所に停めなければならなくなり、バスで登校する学生たちだけでなく、他の学生にも危険です。
歩道への駐車は道路交通法違反です。登下校の時間帯には、HISの学生だけでなく、近隣の学校の学生もいます。歩道（特に、新しい寮の前と高台小学校の壁の隣）に駐車なさらないようお願いします。

It is getting spring-like weather but limited parking space and narrow streets around the school continue an issue. Please refrain from parking in front of neighbors house or blocking the passage of other cars. In case there is a car coming towards you, please wait for that car to pass especially if your side has slightly more space. Your kindness and thoughtfulness are much appreciated.
A couple of cases of the driver missing the red signal in front of the school were seen. Please make sure that there is no car coming, even if the signal is green.
春らしくなってきましたが、駐車スペースが限られていることと学校周辺の道幅が狭いのは続いています。近隣のおうちの前に駐車したり、他の車の通行を妨げるような位置への駐車はご遠慮くださいますようお願いします。もし、前から車が来ている時には、自分側のスペースに少しでも余裕がある時には特に、相手の車が通るのを待ちましょう。皆さんの思いやりとお心遣いに感謝します。
運転手が学校前の赤信号を見落としたところが目撃されています。青信号でも車が来ないことをよく確認してください。

As discussed in the last meeting, we organized Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day on February 23rd. Considering the current situation with Covid, lunch order form was sent using Google Form and teachers and staff were able to choose from various dishes, such as Indian curry, tacos, Japanese or Chinese style obentos. It was much appreciated by the teachers and staff. Thank you for the class representatives who helped with ordering and delivering lunch.
You might have read in the email from Mr. Schlosser, the parking space at school is very limited with the big piles of snows in the field. If your child is in secondary school and if possible, please drop off/pick up where there is more space away from school. For elementary parents/guardians, please be kind to give the space for the others as soon as you drop off/pick up. Streets continues to be narrow with limited view of pedestrian on the sidewalk. Please drive slowly and watch out for the puddles!
前回のミーティングで話し合った通り、2月23日に先生と職員感謝の日を行いました。現在のコロナウィルスの状況を考慮して、グーグルフォームを使ってランチの注文表を送り、先生と職員の皆さんにインドカレー、タコス、和食や中華のお弁当などのいろいろな種類の中から選んでいただく方法にしました。先生と職員の皆さんにはとても喜んでいただけました。ランチの発注とお届けのお手伝いをしてくださったクラス代表の皆さん、ありがとうございました。
Mr. Schlosserからのメールをご覧になられたかと思いますが、学校の駐車スペースがが雪のためにかなり少なくなっています。お子さんがセカンダリースクールの方はできれば、学校から離れたスペースのある場所でのdrop off/pick upをお願いします。道路の幅は引き続きとても狭く、歩道を歩く歩行者が見えにくくなっています。運転はゆっくりと、そして水溜りにご注意ください。

PTA Steering Committee members have voted and decided to donate 20,000 yen for the fundraising for Tonga organized by the Student Council.
Following is the thank you message from Student Council MUSH:
Dear PTA,
Thank you for your generous offer to donate ¥20,000 to our Tonga Relief funding drive. It shows us that you recognize the value of students, our interests, and our ideas. We would also like to share more information with you about the organization, Friends of Tonga, where we will be sending all donations.
Friends of Tonga is a non-profit charity organization affiliated with the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) that works to promote and provide access to education, literacy and development opportunities across Tonga. They are a volunteer-led organization helping and connecting Tongan people and local organizations to support and enhance education and opportunities across tonga. Friends of Tonga mainly focuses on providing quality education and access to children and giving opportunities to Tongan people.
After the eruption of the Hunga -Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcanic eruptions and tsunami Friends of Tonga has created a new campaign. This campaign called the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai Volcanic Eruptions and Tsunami Disaster Relief Campaign is working to identify reputable organizations to partner with in order to help Tongan communities impacted by this natural disaster. They are continuing to learn more information daily about the damage caused and needed throughout Tonga. As donations are coming in the funds are being directed by on the ground organizations in order to help Tongan people throughout Tonga. Friends of Tonga has set a goal of $100,000 and has already raised $64,063.83 (as of Feb. 3rd) in order to support people affected by the disaster.

Do you remember the first couple of weeks at HIS? - It's always nice to have someone saying hi to you with a smile.
Mr. Loughran has been taking care of plowing snow at school. - It's helpful to have extra hands, in case of heavy snow like we had a couple of days ago.
"Can I help you?" can make a big difference, especially in community like ours with family atmosphere. There is always something you can do for the school and the others.

Parking under the dorm building
Because of the snow on the ground, the ceiling of the parking is much lower than usual. If you are driving a SUV or a van, you might want to park in the parking behind the dorm. Also, this parking gets icy and it could be difficult to get out with front/back wheel drive cars. Please be careful!
If you could come 15-20 mins earlier for pick up today, please help with snow plowing!

積雪のため、駐車場の天井までの高さが通常より低くなっています。SUVやバンは、寮の裏の駐車場に停めた方がいいかと思います。また、前輪／後輪駆動の車は、路面凍結により出づらくなることがあります。ご注意ください。

Snow removal has started in the area near the school. It is possible that the access to school from the smaller hill (on the right of the school, facing the school building) and the street coming up from Seven 11) will be closed.

Piles of snow near the school will be removed either on the 26th or 27th. Hour is not communicated and depending on the workload, it might be rescheduled. If this takes place during the pick up/drop off time, the streets near the school could be closed until the work is finished. If that happens, you can park your car at near by parking such as COOP or AEON and walk to the school. Please refrain from parking your car on the street, as it will affect the snow removal process of the area. If you are walking to school, please be careful as there will be many trucks and large vehicles passing. Please plan to leave for the school with some extra time and if you see the work taking place, please inform the class representative so that the information can be shred with the other class. Thank you!
学校周辺の排雪が26日もしくは27日に行われる予定です。時間は未定で、進捗状況によっては別の日になることがあります。登下校の時間に排雪が入ると、作業終了まで学校周辺の道が閉鎖されます。その場合は、車をCOOPやイオンに停めて、歩いて来てください（路上駐車は排雪の妨げになるのでご遠慮ください）。歩いていらっしゃる方は、トラックや重機などが多く通りますので、ご注意ください。学校には余裕を持って来てください。また、近くで排雪作業が行われているのを見かけたら、クラス代表に連絡していただき、他のクラスの皆さんとの情報共有のお手伝いをしていただけると助かります。よろしくお願いいたします。

We hope you all had a nice break. You probably have seen snow piled up at the corner of the streets. Please be careful with pedestrian when you drive. If this is your first winter in Sapporo, due to removing of the snow from the streets to the snow dumping area (organized by the city) and road condition, driving could take 1.5-2 times more time than when there is no snow. Please plan to leave home earlier than usual.
Parking at the school has less space because of the snow. Please me kind to give the space to the others once you have dropped off/picked up your child/ren. Thank you for your kindness.

楽しい冬休みを過ごされたでしょうか。道路の角に雪山が多く見られるようになりました。運転される際には歩行者に十分ご注意ください。また、排雪作業（溜まった雪を雪捨て場に移動すること）や路面状況などで、通常より車での移動に通常の1.5-2倍くらいの時間がかかります。札幌の冬が初めての方、ご注意ください。
雪のため、学校の駐車場のスペースが限られています。お子さんの登下校後には速やかに車を移動して、他の方に場所をお譲りくださるようお願いします。ご協力よろしくお願いいたします。

With the state of emergency, we have decided not to organize our last Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day in usual manner. Instead, we will be taking orders from each teachers and staff what they would like to have and lunch will be delivered on June 18th, last day of school for the teachers/staff. Thank you for your understanding and we hope things will get better over summer, for next school year! We would like to thank all teachers and staff for all their work for the students throughout this year.
We had a wonderful team of Class representatives this year. While we had limited activities with a lot of restrictions, they were always there to support and to help better communicate with their class parents. Thank you, Class representatives! Student Council's MUSH is organizing a food drive for an organization called 北海道の労働と福祉を考える会, which helps out the homeless community in Sapporo. They're hosting an event where they give out food, clothes, and other basic necessities to the homeless people in Sapporo on April 29th (Showa day). They are collecting following items for the event until next Thursday and Donation box can be found at Genkan. Your contribution will be much appreciated. HIS PTA Sapporo is selling T shirt as a way to fundraise and to share the Husky Spirit.
All the profit will go to PTA fund to support learning of the students.
Price of a T shirt is 1,700 yen, regardless of size, and it will be delivered mid-end of April.
If you would like to make a purchase, please fill out the attached form and pay the exact amount (NO CHANGE WILL BE PROVIDED) in a sealed envelope by APRIL 9th.
Elementary students can pass the order form to homeroom teacher and secondary students can bring it to the office.
PTA volunteers will be at the Genkan at drop off/pick up time, if you wish to pay them directly.
When your order arrives, they will be taken home with the student (except for Staff and teachers). If you wish to have them mailed, please contact us at pta.sapporo@gmail.com before ordering.

Here is the message from Huskies MUSH (Student Council’s service group):
Huskies MUSH is starting a PET bottle cap collection which will help provide funds for providing vaccinations for people in need. The bottle caps will be donated to a non-profit organization called "NPO法人全国障害者福祉援護協会北海道地区本部" where 1 kg of bottle caps will equate to 5 yen and 4 kg of bottle caps are needed for 1 vaccine. This will be a project that will promote sustainability as well as good health and well-being at HIS!

Update on the road safety near school: According to Mr. Tawaraya from HIS office, someone from Minami-ku Doboku Center had on site visit. The case will be discussed and they will get back to HIS with possible measures they can take. Meanwhile, please be kind not to park covering the sidewalk or near zebra crossing, as our pickup time overlaps with that of the elementary school near by. The parking space at school is even more limited with the heavy snow from the other day, but safety of everyone, including those of the neighbors should be our priority. Thank you for your support and understanding.
学校周辺の道路安全についてのアップデートです。HISオフィスの俵谷さんより、南区土木センターの方が現状を見にきてくださったと連絡がありました。対応を検討した後、再度連絡が来るそうです。合わせてお願いですが、HISのピックアップタイムと隣の小学校の下校時間と重なることもありますので、歩道に乗り上げたり、横断歩道の付近の駐停車はご遠慮ください。先日の大雪の影響もあり学校の駐車スペースがとても限られているのは十分承知していますが、ご近所の方も含めた皆さんの安全が第一です。ご理解とご協力お願いいたします。

Please be careful as the hight allowance for the parking under the dorm is lower than usual with the snow. Parking space at school is very limited in winter and we appreciate your kindness in park tightly, which will allow space for the others. With the recent weather, the condition of the roads varies in different part of the city and it changes frequently. Please extra care when you walk or drive.

Project Santa
We are collecting gifts donations for the children at three childcare facilities in Hokkaido.
Price range of a gift: 1500 - 2000 yen
Each student should buy a present for their same gender and age
(Families with more than one child at HIS are welcome to donate one gift total if they prefer)
NO CARDS, LETTERS or NAME should be attached to the gift
Please write your age, gender and a simple description of the gift on a "Post-It" and attach it to the gift
(Example: Age 7, Girl, Stuffed animal)
Please do not write anything directly on the present
IMPORTANT: Please do not wrap the gifts
All gifts should be store-bought (No USED or 100 yen shop items, please)
Presents are to be brought to HIS by Friday December 4th.
Bring gifts to Elementary Homeroom teachers, Project Santa Box in the library or under the tree in MPR

1500-2000円以内
学生の性別と年齢向けのプレゼントを購入してください。
(複数のお子さんがHISにいるご家庭は、１つのプレゼントの寄付をしていただいても構いません）
カード、お手紙や名前を添付しないでください。
付箋に、年齢と性別とプレゼントの中身を簡単に書いたものをプレゼントに貼ってください。
(例：7歳、女、ぬいぐるみ）

We had A LOT of donation. Thanks to Student Council, who have organized the event, elementary students had trick or treat last Friday. Secondary Students also shared some sweets following Monday. Thank you for your support!

DONATION FOR TRICK OR TREAT WANTED!
Student Council will be organizing Trick or Treat and PTA would like to support them by donating candies/sweets. Considering the current situation and safety, we will be collecting only store bought, individually wrapped candies which are NUTS FREE (there are students with allergy. Please check the ingredients on the package). Healthy snacks, such as individually packed pretzels, raisons, popcorns and crackers are welcome! Donation box will be set at the entrance starting September 30th. Thank you for the Student Council for organizing this event and let's support the students! Helping with HIS library has been one of the volunteer works of PTA. Following Covid-19 safety protocol, we might not be able to ask new volunteers to start working now. We would be happy to contact you when things get better. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Dan at dstern@his.ac.jp
Mr. Dan Stern is our new librarian and following is a message from him:
I am a 6th grade homeroom teacher and librarian. This is my first time in Japan and I'm looking forward to learning more of the language and culture. Before this, I taught in Minnesota and Mexico, most recently in a Montessori environment. One of my goals this year is to update the HIS library collection and start reinventing how we think and use the HIS library.
Mr. Dan will be submitting a request for PTA Grants for the purchase of new books and we will talk about it in the next meeting.
図書館でのお手伝いは、PTAボランティア活動は一つです。コロナウィルス対策で、新しいボランティアメンバーにすぐ活動を始めていただくのは難しいかもしれませんが、活動できるようになったらご連絡させていただきます。興味のある方は、Mr. Dan dstern@his.ac.jp まで。

Student Council has organized a food drive with HAJET (The Hokkaido Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching) to support foreign residents in Hokkaido. They are collecting canned food, instant meals, pasta, rice, sanitary items and cash for donation. There are boxes at the main entrance to collect the items. For details, please see the letter below. Your support will be much appreciated.

The end of school year brings mixed feelings, accomplishment and sadness. Mr. & Mrs. Ratzliff, Mr. & Mrs. Holywell, Ms. Marquez and Ms. Sugino are leaving HIS. With the current circumstances, many of us could not say thank you in person. As a token of our appreciation from PTA, wooden pens made in Hokkaido was given to the four teachers All the best wishes and we will miss you!

Unfortunately, we will not be able to organize homemade lunch for Teachers and Staff Appreciation Day this month. In stead, pre-packed snacks, sweets, fruits and drinks were prepared in 206 for reopening of the school. Many teachers sent PTA thank you messages and we look forward to organizing again next year! Thank you for your understanding.

I am very much looking forward to joining the community as Head of School beginning on August 1st, 2020. I would like to invite you to join me for introductions and to answer any questions you may have. We have several zoom opportunities available.
First, for elementary families and any interested staff: June 10 from 12:10 - 12:55 OR 2:00 - 2:45.
For secondary families and any interested staff: June 12 from 12:10 - 12:55 OR 2:00 - 2:45.
In addition, there will be an evening meeting, open to all, on Wednesday, June 24th, 6:00pm - 6:45pm.
If you are unable to join in person, Megumi has generously offered to collect questions beforehand so that I can answer those as well. Please send them to her at pta.sapporo@gmail.com. She will also be providing Japanese language support during the meetings.

We are saddened to hear that Mr. Aoyama, who worked as a HIS bus driver for many years, has passed away after many years of battle with cancer. His smile and attentiveness were much appreciate by both students and parents. Our thoughts are with the family.
とても悲しいことに、HISのバスドライバーとして長年お仕事してくださった青山さんが、がんの闘病の末お亡くなりになられました。青山さんの笑顔と気遣いは、学生にも保護者にもとてもありがたいものでした。ご冥福をお祈りいたします

As it was announced from the school administration yesterday,
Week of March 2 ~ 6:
Teachers instruct online learning programs (within regular school hours)
Dorm students begin to return to their homes and continue online learning
Week of March 9 ~ 13:
HIS will add an additional week of online learning (within regular school hours) to follow government directives
Week of March 16 ~ 20:
Spring Break, as scheduled
Week of March 23 ~ 27 [Stage #1 - IF NECESSARY - Depending on Government Decisions on Public School Closures]
Shortened school day, In-person [Optional Online] Educational Program
Teachers and students would report for a 5-hour, 10:00 AM ~ 3:00 PM school day.
Four, 60-min. blocks would be taught with a 50-min lunch
All instruction would be live-streamed
Students and families comfortable with the situation would send their children to school.
Students and families not comfortable with the situation, could attend online
A shorter school day allows students and staff to avoid rush hours, which is a key concern for many
A shorter school day helps ensure healthy sleep times, which is something suggested by health organizations.
This schedule allows us the time to ensure the building is disinfected each day.
Additional time will be picked up as follows:
As Spring Bazaar is canceled, April 13 would be taken as an academic contact day
Wednesday morning Late Start would be be canceled for the rest of the year (Adds 2 days).
We will not be running our usual MAP assessment testing this year. This also adds about a day to for grades 4 ~ 11.

3月9日から13日まで
HISは日本の政府の指針に従い、通常の学校時間内にオンライン学習の週とします。
3月16日から20日まで
予定通り、春休みとします
3月23日から27日まで （第１ステージ：日本の政府の公立学校の休校するかしないかの判断により、必要であれば）
登校する場合は、通常より短い授業時間。他の選択肢として、オンライン学習プログラム
登校時間は先生、生徒ともに10時から3時までの５時間とする。
60分で４時限、お昼休みは50分
全ての授業はライブストリーミングされます。
学生や家族が、登校させることが気にならないは登校。
登校させることが気になる場合は、オンラインで出席。
学校時間を短くすることによって職員と学生は、大きな不安要素のひとつとされるラッシュアワーを避けることができる
学校時間を短縮することによって、多くの保険機構が勧める健康的な睡眠時間を確保することができる。
このスケジュールによって、毎日学校の建物を消毒する時間が確保できる。

スプリングバザーが中止になったので、4月13日は授業日になります。
水曜日のLate Startは、今年度中はなくなります（これによって授業日が2日分増えます）。

Spring Bazaar 2020 is cancelled.
Spring Bazaar 2020 is cancelled.
Due to the outbreak of coronavirus around the world, HIS Spring Bazaar on April 11th will be cancelled. It is one of the biggest PTA sponsored event, which is enjoyed by many every year, and it was not easy decision to make. However, we all should support by doing what is said to help reduce the risk of getting or/and spreading the virus. Let's hope that it will go away soon and we can plan another fun event when things are better. Items which are donated already will be sold to second hand shop and the money raised will be added to PTA fund. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

2020年 スプリングバザーは中止になりました。
コロナウイルスの感染拡大のため、4月11日に開催予定だったスプリングバザーは中止することになりました。スプリングバザーはPTA主催の大きなイベントの一つとして、毎年多くの方に楽しみにしていただいている中、この決定は容易なものではありませんでした。しかしながら、ウイルスの感染や感染拡大の危険を減らすと言われれることを私たちがすることによって、事態の収束に協力すべきだと思います。ウイルスの流行がおさまり、落ち着いた時にまた楽しいイベントを企画できたらと思っています。なお、既にフリーマーケット用にご寄付いただいている商品につきましては、リサイクルショップに売らせていただき、その分をPTA基金として計上させていただきます。皆さまのご理解とご協力をお願いいたします。

ご存知かとは思いますが、世界中で新型コロナウィルスの感染が広まっており、昨日、北海道でも感染されたかたが一人発見されました。HISの保護者で看護師の方から、医療機関で使われている標準予防策についてメールをいただきました。これに含まれる、
1. 手指衛生（手洗い、手指消毒）
2. 手袋、マスク、眼鏡など防護する使う
3. 周りにあるものの表面を清潔、消毒する
は、私たちにも予防のためにできることです。

Two cases of novel coronavirus were found in Japan. World Health Organization recommends following to protect yourself and others:
Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water;
When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw tissue away immediately and wash hands;
Avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough;
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early and share previous travel history with your health care provider;
When visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals;
The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, milk or animal organs should be handled with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices.

日本でも新型コロナウィルスと診断された方が2人います。世界保健機構（WHO)は、自分と他の方を守るために以下のことを推奨しています。
手をアルコールベースのハンドクリーナーもしくは石鹸と水で頻繁にきれいにする
咳やくしゃみをするときには口と喉を、曲げた肘もしくはティシュでカバーする。ティッシュはすぐに捨て、手を洗う。
熱や咳のある人とには濃厚接触は避ける
熱や咳が出たり、呼吸困難の時には早めに医療機関に相談し、渡航歴を知らせる。
新型コロナウィルスの発生した地域では生きた動物を販売する市場に行く場合には、防護されていない状態で生きた動物、もしくはそれらが触れるところには直接触るのを避ける。
生や十分に調理されていない動物製品の食用は避ける。よい食品安全の慣習に従い、調理されていない食材との交差汚染（クロスコンタミネーション）を避けるため、生肉、ミルク、動物の臓器を扱う際には注意しすること。

We will be planning to have our first Teacher & Staff Appreciation Day on December 17th from 8:15 - 14:00 in 206.

It was a nice, sunny day for successful Fall Festival!
We had many visitors and they seemed to have had good time. International food and bake sale with drinks were much appreciated. It could not have been possible with your support in many ways. We appreciate your support.
Profit is being counted and the details will be shared as soon as it is available.
お天気に恵まれ、フォールフェスティバルは大盛況のうちに終了しました。

Fall Festival is coming soon! We are still looking for more volunteers and donations for raffle prize, sweets for Trick or Treat and baked goods. More more information, please see below or take information leaflet at the entrance. Fall Festival flyers are also available at the entrance. Please take one and share with your family and friends!
Big thank you to Mr. Midorikawa and Mr. Lazirko! Mr. Midorikawa has donated a big popcorn maker and Mr. Lazirko has made a cart to go with it. They surely will make events more fun!
PTA will be organizing Bake sale and Trick-or-treat at Fall Festival and we would appreciate your donation!
Bake sale: We sell home baked goods and it is one of the most popular booth. Don’t you like when somebody bakes for you? Many visitors feel the same!
Q: What can be donated?
A: HOMEBAKED goods, which can be sweet or savory.
Here are some examples: cake, cookies, brownies, bread, pie, pizza. You do NOT have to cut them or pack them into individual portions.
Trick or treat: There will be Trick or treat on the 2nd floor of school and we would love to have sweets to give out. Many visitors come for Halloween-ish atmosphere at HIS.
Q: What can be donated?
A: Individually wrapped sweets that are store bought. In supermarket, you will find a big bag of chocolate, candies, cookies and other kind of sweets.
Q: When and where can I bring them?
A: Sweets for Trick or treat can be brought anytime from today, to 206 (Teachers’ lounge), where you will find a box marked “Sweets for Trick or treat”. Bake sale items can be brought to 206 on the day before (November 8th) or to Bake Sale stall in the gym on November 9th.

トリック オア トリート：学校の2階でトリック オア トリートをするので、配るお菓子を集めています。HISのハロウィンっぽい雰囲気を楽しみに来てくださる方もたくさんいます。

A: 個包装してある、市販のお菓子を集めています。スーパーなどで売っている、大袋入りのチョコレート、飴、クッキーなど。
Q: いつ持ってくればいいの？
A: トリックオアトリートのお菓子は、もう受け付けています。206（ティーチャーズラウンジ、MPRのステージの真上にあります）に"Sweets for Trick or Treat”と書いてある箱があるので、その中に入れてください。ベイクセールで販売するものは、前日の11月8日に206にお持ちいただくか、当日(11月9日）に体育館のベイクセールのテーブルまでお持ちください。

Message from Mr. Ratzliff: The head of school will provide a child protection training to those who wish to volunteer at the school and for those who intend to provide a learning program after school. The training will be in both Japanese and English. Our school accreditation through WASC requires us to provide annual awareness and training in child protection (sometimes called "child safeguarding") as part of ensuring a safe and secure learning environment. Those interested in volunteering or receiving the training, please come and attend one of the following two sessions.

This year, I would like HIS PTA to focus more on socializing side. Fundraising is not the biggest goal and it is a byproduct. I hope that volunteering will be a way to get to know each other and make friends. It is important for the school to have a tight knit PTA, parents and teachers, to work together to support of learning and the learning environment for the students.
I am not the one and only PTA member. You all are members and you pay membership fee. You might want to know how your money is spent. I know that often time, the same usual people do a lot for an event, but it is because they care for the school and students. I am sure that you care as much. If you see someone working, please talk to them and join, the more the merrier!

今年度のPTAは、皆さんの交流により力を入れたいと思っています。ファンドレイジングはPTAの一番重要な目標ではなく、活動の副産物です。ボランティア活動はお互いを知り、友達を作るきっかけの一つです。より良い生徒の学びやその環境を作るためにも、先生と保護者がボランティア活動を通じて結束するPTAは学校にとって大切です。
私ひとりだけがPTAのメンバーではありません。皆さん一人一人がメンバーであり、皆さんは学費とともにPTA会費を払っているのです。皆さんのお金がどのように使われているか知りたくありませんか。いつも、同じ人たちがイベントのために活動してるように思われることが多々あるかもしれません。それは、その人たちが学生や学校のために協力したいという気持ちの現れであり、その気持ちは皆さんも同じかと思います。作業をしている方を見たら是非、声をかけてみてください。みんなでやった方が楽しいですよ！

Congratulations to the Class of 2019! We wish you all the best in the future.
PTA sponsored BBQ after Secondary Sports Day on the 19th. Thank you Mr. Johnson, who has grilled over 100 hamburger pates. A big thanks go to Mrs. Lazirko, Mrs. Nakamura and Mrs. Veath, Mrs. McKenny who helped to shop and to serve. Students were happy to have a hot snack after getting wet in water slide.
We could not have achieved this far without many supports from you in different ways. Your kindness and generosity are much appreciated and we hope to have your continuous support next year!

At Spring Bazaar, we sell home baked goods. It is a very popular booth each year.
Don’t you like when somebody bakes for you? Many visitors feel the same!
Q: What can be donated?
A: Baked goods can be sweet or savory.
Here are some examples: cake, cookies, brownies, bread, pie, pizza. You do not have to cut them or pack them into individual portions.
Q: When and where can I bring them?
A: They can be brought to Room 206 on April 12th, the day before Spring Bazaar or directly to Bake Sale booth in the gym on the day of the bazaar (April 13th).

We would love to have more volunteers for Spring Bazaar and also donations for PTA flea market!
If there are things which are still in good condition but not needed in your house, please donate them to PTA! Items can be dropped in the red basket at Genkan. (If you are not too sure if the item is good enough or not, please imagine if you would buy it if someone is selling..) Books, things from different countries, toys (No staffed animals, unless they are new), dish.. It's also a nice opportunity to ask your child/ren to go through things they have and to clean up.

PTA chair was happy to join Junior's service trip presentation. It was impressive to know how they fundraised for the trip and to learn about the contry and their plan. In this month's meeting, it was voted to support this trip. 13 students from the class will be going to Laos to help build bungalows for the locals to have stable income through tourism. We look forward to hearing the stories from the trip when you are back!

Application to know where the bus is for the school bus riders' parents/guardians!
PTA would like to thank the school office, especially Mr. Tawaraya, for doing all the necessary for introducing the GPS for the school bus. Special hanks go to a parent, who shared the idea of HIS to have this service. HBA, a Sapporo based company, provides this service for free by asking advertisers to pay and not the users. It helps school bus riders' parents/guardians a lot, especially in winter when waiting outside gets very cold. We welcome your opinion and suggestion, which could make a big difference. Question about leftover tickets from Fall Festival
There was a question if the remaining tickets from Fall Festival can be used at next event. All the ticket sale and use are counted right after Fall Festival. For accounting reasons, we kindly ask you not to use them at next event. We will announce the closure of the event ahead of time to allow the time for the tickets to be used or/and to make a donation box at the entrance.

Fall Festival is tomorrrow! Thank you so much for all your help.
Here are information about this afternoon's setting up.
Food booth coordinators: Please read Fall Festival 2018 as well.
Setting Up:
Setting up starts at 15:00.
Students will help to move the tables to the gym and you can start setting up your booth.
Please cover the tables with the paper (from the big rolls for crafts/art), so that they do not get damaged.
If you are assigned to a booth, please work on yours first and then help the others.
Cleaning Up:
PTA will provide trash bags and cloth for cleaning. After the event (or can be earlier, if you sell out. However, please do not unfold the tables before 14:00 for safety reasons), please clean the tables and the area around.
Parking:
On the 3rd, if you are coming to school by car, please consider car pooling if possible.
Please park at Takadai Elementary School next door, map can be found in the e-mail sent a couple of days ago or in Hex.
It will be on the right side, as you face to the main entrance of Takadai Elementary School, NOT left side as we usually do (there will be someone guiding).
