Our Story
In our project, we decided to plan a beach clean-up with the help of San Diego Coastkeeper. We wanted to do a beach clean-up because it involved our classmates and the community. We also wanted our classmates to see their impact on the beaches and the ocean wildlife.
During our beach clean up at Mission Beach, we documented all of the trash we picked up to see if we could find any patterns. We found an overwhelming amount of plastics, both parts of plastics and whole plastic parts. We talked about our own plastic usage and where plastic goes when we don’t recycle it.
Our Solution
Our project addresses climate change by directly grabbing and removing macroplastics (roughly 5 five pounds) out of the beach and moving them to the proper landfills. The first part of our project was spent communicating with Delanie (SD Coastkeeper spokesperson) and seeing what we could do for our project. After finalizing our idea for a beach clean-up, we had to gather resources but after bringing up this struggle to Delanie she had been more than welcome to support us and bring out some of her materials for our project. We as a group learned about the difference between micro and macro plastics as well as how hard it is to try and plan a large event especially during a pandemic
