Our Story
Our project is about composting and its importance to the health of the environment. Over the past few months, we partnered up with Sustainable South Bay and created a plan to make a composting system in our school. We are very passionate about this project because our school campus is often filled with trash and food waste, and we value keeping our campus clean. When food is disposed of in a landfill it rots and becomes a large source of methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with twenty-one times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
Our Solution
We acknowledged that the food scraps on our campus were affecting the look of our school and we needed a consistent composting system to ensure that we are making a difference. First, we ordered a compost bin and we’ve been collecting food scraps from around the school, in hopes that our fellow students would contribute. Every day after lunch, the campus becomes extremely littered, so we made sure to put our bin in a central place in our lunch area to make it easy for the students to put their food scraps inside. After that, we go out after lunch and collect our compost bin as well as other food scraps we see around. With our plan, we're hoping to cut the amount of meal waste within our school. We're hoping to make our school a cleaner environment and reduce the amount of wasted food in our community, one step at a time.
