Sunrise San Diego
Our project was a clothing swap. People donated clothes, came to the clothing swap after school and took any clothes they liked in the hopes that no clothes would be left behind. With the clothes that were left behind, we donated them to Goodwill so that they could continue to be reused.
Our Story
Our project was a clothing swap that brought awareness to how the fast fashion industry directly relates to climate change. We collected donated clothes from around the school, and then held a clothing swap where students could pick up clothes they wanted. We chose a clothing swap because we thought a lot of people would benefit from a clothing swap, and it might influence people to start getting second-hand clothing instead of shopping at big companies like H&M that contribute to fast fashion and fossil fuel emissions. We opened this up to our grade level at first, but we ended up attracting several people from not just our high school, and we are going to expand the event in the future.
Our Solution
Our project helped shed light on the effects of fast fashion and how the constant production of clothes impacts the environment. Buying new clothes especially from fast fashion brands contributes to 10% of the yearly carbon emissions. Swapping clothes lets people find clothes that are new to them without buying new clothes which lessens their contribution to the carbon emitted into the atmosphere.
