Presenting to the High Tech High board of trustees. A proposal to install solar panels in the High Tech High parking lot.
Our Story
Our story starts with conferring with our mentor organization and learning about their goals. Their primary work is helping San Diego be carbon-free by 2035 and helping communities struggling with the challenges of climate change. With the help of our mentor organization and desire to help our community, we came up with the idea of having solar panels in our school parking lot. The solar panels can provide renewable energy to our school as well as create shade. Schools have a very large carbon footprint and doing this for even just one school can open up the conversation for reducing carbon emissions for other schools too.
Our Solution
Our long-term goal was to put solar panels in the parking lot, however, we knew that we only had a limited amount of time to complete our project. We decided to help get the ball rolling by convincing the higher-ups of High Tech High that a solar panel carport was a good idea because it will help us be more carbon-free. Throughout our project, we contacted a few different people either from High Tech High or from Liberty Station to help us get our facts in order before we presented them to the HTH Board. One lesson we learned was how difficult it is to tackle big infrastructural change. We also learned that there are different elements to change, and that determination is imperative to achieving change.
