In addition to our engaging podcast elective, I’m excited to introduce Broadcast Beginnings, our dynamic Morning Announcements project. This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to create engaging, relevant stories that inform and inspire our school community. By participating, students not only discover the power of storytelling but also develop essential skills in media production.
Currently, our announcements are recorded at the main news desk, which provides a solid foundation but limits the variety of stories we can cover. To expand our reach, we’re working to enhance our production capabilities with the addition of new equipment, including an extra camera and rig. These upgrades will allow us to structure our team into two groups: one focusing on news desk duties and the other on field reporting. This dual-team approach will open up exciting possibilities, enabling students to conduct interviews, capture extracurricular activities, and engage in spontaneous “man-on-the-street” segments.
Throughout the school year, students rotate through various roles—reporters, camera operators, editors, graphic designers, and more—gaining hands-on experience in every aspect of production. This structure helps students build technical skills in equipment handling, lighting, and sound while fostering creativity and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
Our announcements are broadcast every Friday morning to over 1,000 students and staff members, ensuring a consistent flow of engaging and relevant content. Additionally, we plan to extend our reach by featuring select stories on our YouTube channel, connecting parents and community members to the vibrant life of our school. This platform strengthens family-school connections and highlights the incredible work of our student creators.
At its core, Broadcast Beginnings is about more than producing content—it’s about building a stronger school community. By inviting guest speakers, covering diverse stories, and fostering collaboration, this project empowers students to become effective storytellers and contributors to a vibrant, inclusive media experience. We’re excited to see how this program will continue to grow and inspire!
