Content Creation Foundations is an innovative eighth-grade elective at Herricks Middle School where students take their first steps into the world of podcasting under the guidance of their teacher, Michael Heit. In its inaugural year, Herricks Studios became the creative home for student-made podcasts—a launchpad for incredible ideas, collaboration, and storytelling.
From day one, this class was a true partnership between students and teacher. Together, we built not only the projects that fueled our podcasts but also the systems and workflows that shaped the course itself. Students were involved in every aspect of the creative process—from brainstorming and writing show notes in Google Docs to recording, editing, and mastering their own episodes.
Throughout the year, students explored every stage of podcast creation, learning skills that blended creativity with technical mastery:
Setting up and operating professional-quality recording equipment
Developing effective systems for planning and editing
Conducting interviews with thoughtful preparation and confidence
Producing original shows and collaborative group projects that reflected their creativity and hard work
This first year was about more than just learning how to make podcasts—it was about discovering the power of storytelling. Students found their voices, learned to express themselves authentically, and created projects that inspired and connected our school community.
Together, we built the foundation for a program that continues to grow and thrive. Every episode stands as a testament to the passion, teamwork, and dedication of our first cohort.
Welcome to the start of something amazing—we’re so proud to share these first podcasts with you.

My name is Mallak and I'm an 8th-grade student at Herricks Middle School. As a student who wears a hijab, I interview a friend who also wears a hijab. There's one catch, she pretends to her parents that she wears it during the day when in school. To keep her secret safe, I refer to her as "Natasha" in our recording. I hope that this helps people understand what a few American Muslim Females experience growing up. This is a candid conversation about our experiences. We both support one another and have this conversation to present our background in a positive light.
