It is with immense pride and sincerity that I welcome our beloved community once again to the home of dreamers and believers — THE McDonough High School! I am elated to continue working alongside each of you to build upon the strong foundation of academic and athletic excellence here at MHS. Furthermore, we will collaboratively forge a sustainable path forward as we continue to elevate our athletic department within the ever-evolving landscape of high school athletics.
Our mission here at MHS Athletics remains unwavering: “To ensure exceptional extracurricular opportunities are accessible to all students, regardless of zip code or socioeconomic status.” The work we execute within this mission will enable us to transform our vision into reality. GIRLS BASKETBALL:
Lady's Basketball is going to be totally different this year as we have started in the classroom and maintained a 3.2 GPA, along with having the biggest number of ladies with 20 in the program. They have been working hard all summer and fall even having a fall league after not having one the last 2 years.
CHEERLEADING (VARSITY):
This winter, our Warhawks Cheer Program is ready to bring the energy, pride, and spirit to support our Boys and Girls Basketball teams. Fans can expect exciting sideline routines, new game-day traditions, and high-energy crowd engagement as we cheer our athletes through a competitive winter season.
SWIMMING:
The McDonough community can expect an exciting and determined season from the Warhawk Swim Team. Although our roster is small and features several new swimmers learning the ropes, the team is anchored by two experienced veterans who are poised to make a big impact in the pool. Our focus this season is on growth, teamwork, and steady improvement as we build toward a strong showing at the region meet. Beyond competition, we are committed to representing McDonough High with pride through active involvement in our school and community. The Warhawks are ready to make waves—both in the water and throughout the McDonough community!
WRESTLING:
McDonough High Wrestling is finally getting the numbers to compete with other schools. Coach Smith took over the wrestling program we had a total of 5 wrestlers in 2021, now in 2025 this is our biggest team since McDonough has opened in 2019 with a total of 28 young women and men. McDonough High is expecting high intensity and completeness within the wrestling program.
BOYS BASKETBALL:
Coming off of one of the best seasons in school history and graduating 7 seniors, 3 of which are now playing collegiate basketball, a new generation of young Warhawks talent has received the torch and is ready to shine. The community can expect the Warhawks Boys Basketball Program to show the utmost attitude and effort night in and night out on the hardwood. While smaller in size, the community should expect high-paced, energetic play to drive the team to success.
CHEERLEADING (JUNIOR VARSITY):
The community can expect JV Cheer to cheer at all home and away JV basketball games. The JV team often leads cheers, chants, fosters enthusiasm, engages the student section, and boosts the home-crowd energy. We showcase our Warhawk pride each time we step on the court.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
Key Dates that we have circled on the calendar in a match up against our former Coach Holtzclaw at Meadowcreek on November 25th, December 9th against Hampton and December 16th against Ola. Senior Night will be on January 30th and will be a great game against Stockbridge and the night the Lady's program says goodbye to 3 seniors.

Cheer will be present at all events, leading spirit and supporting our Warhawks on the court!

WRESTLING:
The biggest rivalry for the McDonough Wrestling program happens to be our senior night which is January 13, 2026. We will wrestle against Woodland, Dutchtown and Hampton. All schools are in Henry County. So this will be a big night for all.

MHS JV Cheer plays Eagles Landing High School November 20, 2025. This is always a great match up for both our basketball teams and Cheer.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
Spotlight the Lady Warhawks Basketball coaching staff of Destiny Garnigan and Miata Waits. They have truly stepped up to the plate and helped take this program to new heights. Coach G has come in with her young energy and help build our strength and conditioning program up from nothing to now our girls are making their time in the mile run and are stronger. Coach Waits, with here strong ties to the community, has secured so many donations for the team and even has us meeting with the Mayor to discuss ways to build a better relationship for not only our lady's program but for McDonough athletes as well.
CHEERLEADING (VARSITY):
Under the leadership of Coach Jackson, the Cheer Program continues to focus on precision, discipline, and unity. Both JV and Varsity athletes are growing in strength and confidence, motions, and sidelines with every performance. This season, our teams are committed to representing Warhawk PRIDE with professionalism, spirit, and excellence.
SWIMMING:
In her first year with the McDonough High Swim Team, Coach Bridgette Presley has already made a lasting impression. A dedicated triathlete, Coach Presley brings a wealth of experience, endurance training insight, and motivational energy to the program. Her hands-on approach and passion for the sport have driven remarkable improvements in our swimmers’ performances and team morale. Under her guidance, the Warhawks are building momentum and confidence for a strong season ahead.
WRESTLING:
The spotlight of the McDonough High wrestling team would have to be the young ladies that we have on the team that is showing that this is not just a boys sport but females can do this as well.
BOYS BASKETBALL:
Coach Donald Watkins, Jr. (Head Coach). Husband of 4 years to Jendayi Watkins, native of Warner Robins, GA, graduate of Warner Robins High School and Trinity International University (former). Has poured into the community with volunteering, providing youth camps, and is active in getting Warhawks alum back in the building Second year as head coach at McDonough High School (previously assistant for one year). Led the Warhawks to a 25-6 (16-2) record in his inaugural season.
Coach Devan Porter-Wilson (Assistant Coach). First year head-assistant at McDonough. The Columbus native previously served as a Graduate Assistant at Columbus State University. Teaches the Entrepreneurship pathway at MHS. Offensive coordinator and Player Development Coach for the Warhawks Basketball Program
Coach Thalmus McDowell (Assistant Coach). In his sixth season on staff, starting with the Warhawks during the 2020-21 Season. Has previously coached with New Creation Christian Academy. Defensive Coordinator and Player Development Coach for the Warhawks Basketball Program
Coach Tavares Kenny (Assistant Coach). In his 3rd season at McDonough High School and is in his second season as Head 9th Grade Coach. Most recently reached the 9th grade district championship in his first year as 9th grade head coach. The Morrow native also serves as the Director of Analytics for the Basketball Program
Coach Kalawn Waits (Assistant Coach). In his 2nd season at McDonough High School as a community coach and his second season as JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant. Most recently reached the JV district championship in his first year as JV head coach. A Class of 2011 Warhawk Alum who has stayed connected and supportive within our Warhawk community for much of his life.
Coach Vincent Waits (Assistant Coach). A cornerstone in the Henry County community serving in multiple capacities for the Warhawks since 2000 most recently coaching with the basketball, flag football, and lacrosse programs. Over the years, has assisted with scouting, film, and operations for the basketball program
CHEERLEADING (JUNIOR VARSITY):
Ms. Levy has worked effortlessly to ensure the JV Cheer team is ready for friendly competition.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
The two athletes we have high hopes for this season to lead our program is Emery Minton and Korteziana Soilberry. These two sophomores have really grown since last year and it showed in summer workouts, fall league games and the start of the season. They have not only been leaders in the work ethic but vocal as well, taking the younger players under their wings and trying to get they up to speed on what AAAA basketball looks like. They also have the highest GPA on the team at 4.0 and 3.7
CHEERLEADING (VARSITY):
Kalani Manior – Known for her incredibly sharp motions, consistency, and strong game-day presence.
Nickayla Miller – Recognized for her powerful jumps, leadership, and dependable role as a team captain.
SWIMMING:
Vanessa Montford- Returning swimmer Vanessa Montford continues to make waves for the Warhawks this season! Known for her determination and competitive spirit, Vanessa has been steadily improving her times and setting the standard for excellence in the pool. Her experience and knowledge of swim competition have become invaluable assets to our newer teammates, as she leads by example and helps them navigate the waters of their first season.
Karina Varela-Karina Varela is one of our freshmen leaders and multisport athletes who has brought a high level of focus and maturity to our swim program. She earned 4th in her heat in her debut 50-yard freestyle event and continues to show improvement with every practice. She works hard and takes pride in her practices, performances, and swim meet analysis. Most importantly, she is a leader in the classroom as an Honors student and never hesitates with taking the initiative to help coaches or team members.
WRESTLING:
Stephen Mims (Senior)- Stephen's 3rd year wrestling. His junior year he finished runner up in Region 2 AAAA. Stephen also was one of 3 athlete to qualified for the championship.
Cristian Vaughter (Junior)- Cristian's 3rd year wrestling in high school. Cristian is a 2-time state qualifier in wrestling. Cristian has made it to the state championship in wrestling since entering high school.
BOYS BASKETBALL:

CHEERLEADING (JUNIOR VARSITY):
All JV Cheer athletes have grown since the ending of football season. We will have three captains, two new. I am excited to leave a team with leadership skills that will make it easy for my temporary replacement. I have worked diligently with the ladies and gent, to be sure they know what to do and who is set to lead. Each member has a role to ensure everyone is successful and supported.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
Right now we are just starting the season so we don't have a Athlete of the Month but if I had to pick one it would be Zhaeda Butler. She came to us last spring and said she didn't know how to play basketball but wanted to learn and has not missed a spring, summer, fall and early winner practice to date. She has been eager to learn and kept a positive attitude during this process.
CHEERLEADING (VARSITY):
Nickayla Miller – Celebrated for outstanding leadership, spirit, and excellence in performance.
SWIMMING:
Freshman Randy Mason is quickly making a name for himself in his first season with the Warhawk Swim Team. With his tall frame and natural athletic build, Randy has all the tools to become a standout swimmer. In his debut meet, he impressed coaches and teammates alike with a 42.28 in the 50 Freestyle, finishing 5th out of 10—a strong showing for a newcomer to the sport. His dedication in practice, positive attitude, and belief in the program make him one to watch as he continues to develop his technique and speed throughout the season. The future looks bright for this rising Warhawk!

GIRLS BASKETBALL:
Since September I have been pulling grades and the lady's basketball program had the highest GPA to date with a 3.14 and now we are at a 3.3 as we are fresh into our season as of last week. The expectation for the team is to strive for a 3.5 GPA and along with consist communication with the teacher and tutor we are nearing that mark because we want to build up the whole student athlete.
CHEERLEADING (VARSITY)
This month we recognize Sh'London Mayfield, who continues to excel in the classroom while maintaining a positive attitude and strong commitment to the cheer program. Her ability to balance academics and athletics embodies Warhawk PRIDE at its finest.
SWIMMING:
Senior swimmer Vanessa Stenson is the true definition of a student-athlete, excelling both in the classroom and in the pool. With an impressive 3.8 GPA, Vanessa exemplifies leadership, dedication, and integrity in everything she does. She leads by example, motivating her teammates through her work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to improvement. Her drive for academic and athletic excellence makes her a standout representative of McDonough High School and the Warhawk Swim & Dive program.
WRESTLING:
Cristian Vaughter is the true definition of student athlete. Cristian is among the top students in the Junior class. This is also his 3rd year wrestling in high school. Cristian is a 2-time state qualifier in wrestling. Cristian has made it to the state championship in wrestling since entering high school.
