Our coaches are eager to enhance achievement and instill pride in our student-athletes both in the classroom and on the field and court. The Lady Lions basketball team begins the season ranked in the Top 5 for Classification 3A. Last season, they achieved an impressive record of 26 wins and 4 losses. They advanced to the Elite 8 and proudly secured the Region 5-AAA Championship, finishing the season undefeated in the region.
The Lady Lions aim to make another deep playoff run for the 2025-26 season! The Lions Basketball Team is thrilled to recap their successful season last year, during which they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. The team finished 3rd in the highly competitive Region 5-AAA, thanks to the determination and skill of their seniors, who played a crucial role in driving the team into the playoffs. This season, the Lions aim to build on this momentum, secure another playoff berth, and make a deep postseason run.
Ms. Roslyn Evans is the head coach of the Competition Dance program, which will begin its inaugural year. She has been the instructor for the Band's dance team for the past few years and aims to bring that same enthusiasm to the competition dance program. The Lady Lions Dancers will showcase a variety of dance styles in Classification 3A this season, with hopes of making an appearance at the state competition.
This winter season, our athletic department is excited to showcase a strong lineup of programs that reflect our commitment to student development, competitive excellence, and community engagement. Families, fans, and supporters can look forward to highly competitive matchups, renewed rivalries, and growing participation across all winter sports.
Boys Basketball
Our boys basketball program enters the season with a mix of veteran leadership and rising young talent. The team is focused on high-tempo play, defensive intensity, and continuing to build on last year’s momentum. Expect exciting home atmospheres and strong showings in region play.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team returns a core group of athletes committed to pushing the program to new heights. With a focus on discipline, teamwork, and strong fundamentals, this group is poised to compete at a high level and make a run in postseason play.
Dance
The dance team continues to elevate school spirit and athletic artistry. This winter, they will deliver high-energy performances at games and community events, showcasing precision, creativity, and teamwork. Their presence adds an exciting dynamic to the winter sports environment.
Boys Swimming
Our boys swim team is set for another competitive season, featuring student-athletes who excel in both individual and relay events. With a strong work ethic and growing roster depth, the team aims to post personal-best times and make a strong showing at championship meets.
Girls Swimming
The girls swim team brings back experienced returners alongside promising newcomers. Fans can expect standout performances across multiple strokes, as well as continued success in the classroom and the pool. This group is committed to competing with pride and pushing each other toward new records.
Boys Wrestling
The boys wrestling program enters the season with determination and toughness. With athletes competing across several weight classes, our team emphasizes discipline, strength, and strategic preparation. Expect strong performances in dual meets and tournaments throughout the winter.
Girls Wrestling
Girls wrestling continues to grow in popularity and competitive success. This year’s squad features a talented and motivated group ready to make their mark. They bring intensity, resilience, and a desire to elevate the program as girls wrestling expands across the state.

Our November Athlete of the Month is Kenzie Cochran, a standout in flag football. Kenzie excels as a dual player, contributing on both offense and defense. Over the first six weeks of the season, she has passed for 2,150 yards, thrown 15 touchdown passes, and rushed for 162 yards. On defense, Kenzie has made 16 flag pulls and secured 9 interceptions. As a freshman, she demonstrates exceptional leadership and has played a crucial role in building a successful program. Currently, she is recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the Area.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Sophomore Mitchell Carr, a swimmer, set two school records last season in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. He also secured first place in the breaststroke at the HCS County Championship as a freshman. This year, Mitchell has already achieved two personal bests in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, including breaking his own record for the 100 breaststroke in his first two meets.
Senior girls basketball player Angel Thomas earned First Team All-Region 5-AAA honors for the 2024-25 season, playing a crucial role in leading the Lady Lions Basketball team to a Region Championship and an Elite 8 Appearance. Last season, Angel averaged 10.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. This season, the Lady Lions face a competitive schedule, including matchups against Buford, Grayson, and Westlake. Angel's leadership among a young group of Lions will be essential for the team's hopes of making a deep playoff run.
Senior wrestler Ryan Martinez, competing in the 144-pound weight class, is a key member of the Lions' Wrestling Team after qualifying for the State tournament last season. With his leadership and experience, Ryan is poised to help a talented group of Lion competitors advance further into the postseason this year.
ACADEMIC AND LEADERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Luella Athletics is proud to spotlight Raelon Ray, aslo known as "Big Ray." Raelon is a District representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a varsity football player. He is a supportive presence for all sports at Luella, leading the student sections at games and serving as a positive role model for Luella Athletics. No task is too big or too small for Big Ray, as he is always visible and ready to help wherever needed. Shoutout to Raelon Ray for exemplifying "Excellence with Pride!"
