Aims and Content of the Course
We aim to ensure students of Computer Science are able to to:
● gain the knowledge and practical skills to thrive in the fast-changing world of computer science
● analyse and decompose complex problems and apply computational thinking to solve problems
● design a solution to a given problem using pseudocode and/or flowcharts
● code a solution using Python 3 to create a program that is fit for purpose
test & evaluate programs
The assessments will cover the following content headings:
1 Systems architecture
2 Memory and storage
3 Computer networking
4 Network security
5 Systems software
6 Ethical, legal and cultural of digital technology
7 Algorithms
8 Programming
9 Boolean Logic
Assessment and Examinations
The course will be assessed with 2 papers. Both papers are 1hr and 30 minutes in length. Paper 1 will assess students on their ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and principles of Computer Science. Paper 2 will assess students on their ability to apply knowledge and understanding of key concepts and principles of Computer Science.
All students will be given the opportunity to undertake a programming task(s), either to a specification or to solve a problem (or problems), during their course of study. Students may draw on some of the content in both components when engaged in Practical Programming.
This is a highly academic course. Students should have a strong academic background in Mathematics and an extracurricular passion for programming.
Further Progression
Studying Computer Science lays the foundation for further study in Computer Science A Level at Sixth form college. By continuing your academic career and completing a Computer Science related degree. This pathway could lead to a job or a Degree Apprenticeship starting from 20K a year.
The Sixth form colleges will be looking for students to have achieved a Grade 6 or higher at GCSE Computer Science in order to demonstrate their capability of dealing with topics in the field of Computer Science. The average salary for Computer Science jobs is £57, 500.
