Dear Students, Families and Staff,

We have had held three trials with bikes and scooters in the yard and they have all been successful.

Our most recent whole week trial was very successful with lots of students participating. We had some falls, which will always happen when you ride bikes and scooters, but we didn’t have any bad injuries.

We are now calling for students to be able to ride bikes and scooters in the yard at lunch and recess all the time because it will encourage:

  1. More children ride to school, which will make them more active and healthy.

  2. Kids to identify and control risks themselves and help them to be responsible.

  3. The school community to come together, kids will look out for each other.

Our three trials to date have been:

Trial 1 was part of the ‘Day of Play’. Students made a prototpe scooter track to follow which was popular with the younger students but not so popular with the older students.

Trial 2 was a day where everyone could ride their bikes and scooters at recess and lunch. The year 6/7 class put tires chiquains on the courts and everyone involved loved it. Lots of people rode to school that day but the next day when we didn’t have bikes and scooters at lunch no-one rode to school.

Trial 3 was a whole week trial of bikes and scooters at recess and lunch. There were less students at school because of Covid 19, but this trial was a success, with almost half of students bringing a bike or scooter to school. Almost all students at some stage during the week had a bike or scooter at school. There were no bad injuries although there were a few minor injuries which was expected because by riding bikes and scooters, there will always be little hiccups.

Interestingly, these trials have not resulted in more students actively travelling to school. When bikes and scooters can be used in the yard, there have been large numbers at school. But outside of these days, only a handful of older students seem to travel to school on bike or scooter.

We think bikes and scooters should be allowed at recess and lunch all the time because more people will actively travel to school and this is good for health. We found that most kids were controlling the risks themselves and showing a lot of responsibility. We also felt that having bikes and scooters at school helped to bring all the students together and made us all look out for each other. It also made many students very happy to have different options for play in the yard.

To complete the bike and scooter parking bay we need:

  • Scooter racks, wall mounts for older kids $20.00 each x4 = $80.00

  • 2X bike racks (quote from SecuraBike)

  • At least 1 scooter rack for younger students

Thank you for considering this proposal.

Kind regards,
