Report Cards - In third grade the report cards change for all children in HCPSS. This is the first year that students receive a letter grade for their report card in the academic fields.
Music Program - In the related arts program for music all third graders learn how to play the musical instrument called the recorder. It is a small plastic wind instrument that makes music by covering and uncovering holes. It is required that all students purchase a recorder and bring it to school. Details of the purchase of this instrument are sent in your child's take home folder.
Math facts - Third grade level math explores multiplication and division math facts. Children will have math facts flash cards that they will review as home work during the week. Often parents sign a folder or sheet indicating that this home work was completed. The math flash cards for third grade can be printed out from this HCPSS website here.
Chorus - This is the first year that third graders have the option to participate in third grade chorus for the year. Students interested in music may participate in chorus or chorus and orchestra. A permission slip to participate in the chorus program is sent home in the student's Take Home Folder in September. There are two chorus concerts during the school year - winter and spring.
Orchestra - This is the first year that CLES students may participate in the orchestra program. This program offers year long instruction in violin, viola, cello, and bass both as a whole orchestra and as a sectional (where the orchestra director instructs a smaller group of students playing one instrument). A permission slip to participate in the Orchestra program is sent home in the student's Take Home Folder in September. There is a back to band and orchestra night that takes place in September that outlines the expectation of these music programs to parents. Orchestra instruction occurs by third graders missing other instructional or recreational time in school. The rotation of the band schedule is published at the beginning of the school year and is on a four week rotation (weeks A, B, C, and D). A reminder of the current band/orchestra rotation week is published in the weekly Dolphin Detail email newsletter. Students may participate in chorus and orchestra. There are two concerts during the school year - winter and spring. Orchestra students are required to purchase a white CLES orchestra polo shirt offered for purchase at the beginning of the school year. There are two concerts during the school year - winter and spring.
CoGAT testing - in January third graders take the CoGAT test in school. This test determines their academic placement in for math in fourth and fifth grade. Results are available in March.
