Week of 9/24 - 9/28/2018

I really appreciate the work that our staff is doing on a daily basis. This school year has begun in a positive way, and I attribute that to the attitude with which the staff and students are all approaching the work. We hope to set the bar for student expectations high and work to help them all reach it!

Next Tuesday, September 25 at 6:00 pm we will hold 6th Grade Open House. Parents will report to the gym for a brief welcome before being released to visit classrooms.

Thanks for your cooperation and work on the beginning of our annual candy sale. We are quickly going through our candy supply, and that will translate directly into more instructional technology for our school. We truly appreciate your support of this endeavor!

As we examine ways to continuously improve, one thing we would like to do is to help our students take ownership of their learning. We want students to know what they are learning and how they are progressing towards the goals that they and teachers are setting for their learning. We encourage you to engage with your students about what they are learning and areas where they might need some support.

Unbelievably, next Wednesday, September 26 marks the halfway point for our first grading period and the point at which Midterm Progress Reports are available for parents. If your students are struggling now, make contact with teachers and make a plan to help your child succeed. We will only print Midterm Progress Reports for those students and parents who request paper copies. Otherwise, you will be able to check online through PowerSchool.

With school safety firmly in the front of everyone’s minds, I would also ask that you have ongoing discussions around this topic with your students. Some helpful reminders for all of them:

  • School violence is no joking matter. Joking comments have and will be treated with the utmost seriousness, including possible school and legal consequences.
  • School safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you see alarming things on Social Media or you hear alarming comments, share that with an adult or report it to the “Report it, Don’t Ignore It” app.
  • Our best defense against school violence is kindness on a daily basis. Don’t be mean to others and don’t tolerate bullying of others. Silent witnesses to bullying are part of the problem. Take care of one another!

The 2nd Thomas A. Bryson Deer Dash 5K and Kids Run will be held at the Mills River Park on Saturday, October 6 at 9:00 am. Registration is $35.00 per adult and $20.oo per child 10 and Under. All race proceeds will go toward combating opioid addiction. I hope you will consider joining this community event.
