General Information
What is HOC Summer School?
HOC Summer School is an accelerated summer program for Hawaii high schoolers (grades 9-12). It lets students catch up, get ahead, or try new subjects. Keep in mind that:
Semester Courses (.5 credit): 1 summer school day = 1 week of regular school
Year Courses (1 credit): 1 summer school day = 2 weeks of regular school
Courses require daily work (3-6 hours) but offer flexible schedules (no set login times). Just be sure your summer is free – trips, work, or big commitments can make it tough to keep up.
What are the dates for summer school?
HOC Summer School runs for six weeks, from June 4th to July 12th. Please note:
New students must complete a mandatory online orientation by May 16th.
HOC Summer School will observe two holidays (there will be no classes on these days):
June 11th - King Kamehameha Day
July 4th - Independence Day
Who can participate in HOC Summer School?
All students currently in grades 9-12 (including incoming freshmen) can participate in HOC Summer School! This includes students enrolled in:
Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) schools
Public Charter Schools
So, whether your child is attending a traditional public high school or a public charter school in Hawaii, they are eligible to participate in HOC Summer School.
Is there a cost to attend summer school?
The cost of attending HOC Summer School depends on your child's enrollment status:
Public and Charter School Students (Grades 9-12): Thanks to federal funding, summer school is completely FREE for them.
Non-Public School Students (Private or Homeschooled): There is a fee for non-public school students:
$95 per half-credit course
$190 per full-credit course
Additional Information
If your child is exiting the Department of Education (DOE) and not attending a public or charter school next year, they will need to pay the non-public school fees and register during specific dates.
For details on submitting payment and required documents (like birth certificate and proof of residency) for non-public school students, please contact hoc@k12.hi.us
What courses are available for HOC Summer School?
Registration & Enrollment Process
When can I register my child for HOC Summer School?
Registration is online! Here's a breakdown for different student groups:
Current DOE & Charter Students: April 8th at 8:30 AM to April 26th at 2:30 PM
Non-DOE Students (Private or Homeschooled): April 19th at 8:30 AM to April 26th at 2:30 PM
Tip: Enroll early! Spots fill up fast, and it's first-come, first-served.
How do I register my child for summer school?
This is what you will need to do to register your child for summer school:
Register online: Parents/guardians must register students themselves - school staff can't use personal accounts
Choose courses wisely: Consider your child's schedule and workload (1 credit total max). Don't enroll in more than they can handle - open spots are precious
Avoid conflicts: Don't register your child for the same course offered by another summer program
Special needs: If your child has a 504 or IEP, send documents to hoc@k12.hi.us (limited accommodations available).
Review details: The Student Parent Handbook has more information.
Non-DOE students: Check with your child's school if they accept HOC credits. You'll also have a tuition fee.
During registration, you'll also electronically consent to technology use and student media release.
Additional Information
Math Placement: Counselor or math teacher approval is needed to take Trigonometry and Precalcus concurrently.
Teacher Requests: Unfortunately, teacher requests are not accepted. The system randomly assigns students to sections.
What do I need to register my child for summer school?
To ensure a smooth registration process and avoid potential delays, please do not rely on autofill to complete the registration!
Here's what you need to register your child for summer school:
Student Information
Student ID Number: Find this on your child's report card or by contacting their school counselor.
Full Names: Enter your child's first and last name exactly as it appears in Infinite Campus (e.g., Eliza Rae H. Apana, not just Eliza).
Parent/Guardian Information
Valid Email Addresses: Separate email addresses for you and your child are required. Avoid school email addresses and be sure to check spam folders for important updates.
Charter School Students (no Infinite Campus): If your child attends a charter school without Infinite Campus, contact hoc@k12.hi.us before registration.
Electronic Consent: During registration, you'll be asked to electronically sign a consent form for Tech Tools and Student Publication Audio/Video Release.
Tip: Gather all this information beforehand to make the registration process smooth!
Can I register my child for multiple courses?
Sure, students can take multiple courses! However, there's a limit:
Maximum of 1 credit total: This could be two semester courses (each 0.5 credit) or one full-year course (1 credit).
Important: If you choose two semester courses, they'll run at the same time throughout the six-week program. Be sure to plan your schedule accordingly and dedicate time to log in and participate in both courses daily.
Charter School Students: How do I enroll my child for summer school?
Ask your primary school registrar or counselor if they use Infinite Campus, the HIDOE student information system.
If your child's primary school does use Infinite Campus, you may register with your child's HIDOE student ID number.
If your child's primary school DOES NOT use Infinite Campus, you will need to provide the following documents after receiving confirmation of enrollment:
https://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/DOE%20Forms/Enrollment/SIS-10W.pdf
Copy of your child's birth certificate
Copy of proof of residency (utility bill or other statement)
Copy of parent identification
Copy of the Course Request email, which includes registration information
Please email hoc@k12.hi.us for more information.
Non-DOE Students: Can they enroll in HOC Summer School?
Yes! Private school and homeschooled students (non-DOE) can enroll in HOC Summer School. Just keep in mind two things:
Check credit: Confirm with your child's school if they accept HOC Summer School credit.
Pay the fee: Non-DOE students have a tuition fee. See details on our website or FAQs.
New Students: What's the mandatory online orientation about?
Students must be registered or waitlisted for a course to access the Student Online Orientation.
All new students (even those who've taken online courses before with HOC's Blackboard system) must complete a mandatory online orientation before starting their summer school courses. This user-friendly orientation will introduce you to Canvas, the online learning platform used for HOC Summer School.
Why is it important? The orientation equips you with the skills to navigate your courses smoothly and ensures a successful summer learning experience.
How to access it? After you complete enrollment, you'll receive login information for the orientation, which is available anytime before the start date.
Important note: Completing the orientation by the deadline (included in your registration email) is mandatory. Failure to do so will result in being dropped from summer school.
Policies
What happens if my child is waitlisted for a course in summer school?
Being waitlisted means there are currently no available seats in the course. Unfortunately, with most students staying enrolled, a spot opening up can be unlikely.
Here's what you can do:
Explore other options: We recommend checking the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) Summer School website for alternative programs that might interest your child. You can also speak with your child's primary school counselor for additional suggestions.
Stay informed: We'll notify you via email if a spot opens up in your desired course.
Manage multiple registrations: If a spot opens and you're already registered for other courses, you'll need to email HOC at hoc@k12.hi.us to indicate which course you want to drop in favor of the waitlisted one. Remember, students can only take a maximum of one credit total for summer school.
While we can't guarantee a spot, we recommend exploring other options to ensure your child has a productive summer learning experience.
What is the withdrawal policy?
We understand that plans can change. If you need to withdraw your child from HOC Summer School, here's what you need to know:
Before You Withdraw
We encourage you to carefully consider your child's schedule and commitment level before enrolling. However, unexpected situations arise.
How to Withdraw
Parents/Guardians must submit a written withdrawal request via email to hoc@k12.hi.us Important: Withdrawing through your child's primary school or counselor won't be processed, as HOC Summer School is a separate program.
Include the following information in your email (Note: incomplete information may delay processing):
Student's full name
Parent/Guardian's full name
Phone number
Course name
Reason for withdrawal
Withdrawal Deadlines
June 14: This is the last day to withdraw without any marks appearing on your child's official transcript.
July 5: Withdraw by this date and your child will receive a "W" on their transcript. A "W" signifies withdrawal but doesn't impact their GPA.
After July 5: Withdrawals are no longer possible. Your child will receive a grade based on their performance in the course, which will be reflected on their official DOE transcript and GPA.
Additional Information
Students who are dismissed from summer school will not receive credit or a grade.
We recommend acting promptly if withdrawal becomes necessary to ensure a smooth process and minimize any potential impact on your child's academic record.
What is the attendance policy for summer school?
Attendance is required everyday, excluding holidays. Since summer school is accelerated, daily participation is required by logging into Canvas everyday.
Here are the expecations of attending summer school through HOC:
Courses are asynchronous, but occasional live sessions require your presence at specific times.
Daily engagement with materials is expected (reading, lectures, discussions, assignments).
The fast pace means no extensions or make-ups for absences.
Planning is key! Make sure your child's summer schedule allows for the daily dedication required for HOC Summer School.
What are the expectations for student behavior in summer school?
HOC Summer School follows the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) Chapter 19 rules and Hawaii Online Courses (HOC) regulations. This means students are expected to maintain a respectful and responsible learning environment.
Here's a breakdown of potential consequences:
Serious offenses: These will result in dismissal from summer school, with no refund of tuition.
Repeated minor offenses: Students will receive a warning. Continued misbehavior after the warning may lead to dismissal.
For a more detailed breakdown of student misconduct and discipline, you can review the Hawaii Department of Education Chapter 19. However, focusing on respectful behavior towards peers and instructors will ensure a smooth and successful summer school experience for your child.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS: PLEASE READ THE CHAPTER 19 LETTER
Technology and Course Access
What are the technology requirements?
To fully participate, students will need:
A reliable computer: Students be using Canvas, the online learning platform, for coursework. Make sure his/her computer can handle it smoothly.
Stable internet access: A strong internet connection is key for online activities, downloading materials, and staying connected.
Headset (with microphone): While not mandatory, a headset can come in handy for any potential online meetings where a student might need to participate in discussions.
How does my child access the course(s)?
All students will use Canvas, a user-friendly online learning platform. On the first day of summer school, June 4th at 8:00 AM, registered students will be able to log in to Canvas and find their enrolled courses readily available.
When does my child access the course(s)?
Students that are officially registered are able to access the course(s) starting the first day of summer school on June 4th at 8:00 am.
For new students only, they are required to complete the mandatory Student Online Orientation in Canvas before the start date, however the course(s) won't be accessible until June 4 at 8:00 am.
Grades and Report Cards
How will I or my child be informed of their grades and progress?
While HOC Summer School doesn't offer regular progress reports to parents, there are two ways parents can stay informed about their child's performance:
Through your child: Encourage your child to share their grades and progress updates with you throughout the program. They can access their current grades directly within their courses on Canvas, the online learning platform. This open communication helps you both stay on top of their learning journey.
Final Report Cards: After summer school ends, final report cards will be distributed electronically to the email address associated with your child's registration. These reports provide a comprehensive overview of their achievements.
Additional Resources
Parents can also reach out to their child's instructor(s) via email if they have specific questions or concerns about their child's progress.
Contact Information
Who do I contact if I need help about summer school?
