Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I am working in a team for this project with my partner Aiden Vance.
What materials will you need for your project?
For this project, I will need lots of cardboard, a quantity of duct tape, hot glue, popsicle sticks, and possibly tin foil.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I am going to start off by making the base shape of my project and then adding the necessary parts to make my project function. After those steps, I will start adding quality-of-life details to my project to make it better.
What unique qualities will your project have?
Some unique qualities my project will have are using pieces other than cardboard and including them in my piece.
Daily Log:
Day 1: On Day 1 we found teams and made designs for our project. I am working with Aiden Vance. Our design is the first picture.
Day 2: On this day we found what cardboard would work for us. And we made our first cuts in them. It also shows the cardboard we are using. It is the 2nd picture down.
Day 3: On this day we started hot gluing the sides together for support. Then we took out all the other unnecessary pieces and taped the whole body together. The third, fourth, and fifth pictures.
Day 4: On this day we made a mechanism that controls the state of the lid. It took forever. It is the 6th picture down.
Day 5: So the day before we made a hold for the lid but we now realize this would not work. So we had to remove it and fix the box. Then we did some interior designing. Making it more realistic for the purpose I wanted. It is the 7th picture. Not to mention we started a controller.
Day 6: This was the final work day so we finished the whole thing and the controller. We added some detail to our built-in screen and controller to make them feel the most authentic we can make them. This is shown in the 9th picture. Also on this day, we added the whole disk reader. This is shown in the 8th picture.
Day 7: This was the day of the revision. I did not yet finish it this day though.
Using Cardboard, duck tape, popsicle sticks, and some tin foil. I created a Nintendo Gamecube alternative called the HatchBoxx because we were trying to make a cheaper rebrand of the Nintendo Gamecube to show the outrageously small availability the GameCube had overall. It sold about a fifth of its successor the Wii. It was only available for less than 5 years and is Nintendo's 2nd worst-selling console.
During this process, I learned that working with cardboard is harder than it should be. All jokes aside working with cardboard has its ups and downs. Like it is much more durable than paper but much more shreddy than plastic. Also during this project, I learned how sometimes your first design is not what will be your end result.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered Learner because it shows I can. Another standard it connects to is Innovative Designer. It connects to Innovative Designer because this whole project was to design and create a cardboard creation. Since my project was successful and creative it shows I am an Innovative Designer. The last standard I will be sharing is Creative Communicator. My project shows I am a Creative Communicator because the purpose of my project was to show the small number of sales and availability of the "Nintendo Gamecube".
A challenge I overcame on this project was one of my first designs did not work. I was able to fix my problem by using different resources available in the classroom. Such as duct tape, hot glue, and scrap cardboard. Then modifying the original blueprint.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the sides of my project. The reason why I would change it is that we put very low effort into them. I would make them purple like the "Nintendo Gamecube". Maybe out of construction paper.
