Using Straw bees, I created a parachute that will fall slowly because I wanted to see if there was something hanging on it if it would survive. Another reason is to see how long it will go before it goes crazy. Also because I wanted to see if I could make it to where no air gets through.
During this process, I learned how to make a parachute out straws. Another thing I learned was that any hole or spots where air gets through effects the way it falls. Also I learned what the shape of the parachute should be.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because I didn't just build the parachute I also designed it. Also because I kept fixing where I put the wax paper to make it better.
A challenge I overcame on this project was not being able to get the supplies I needed from the store in time. I was able to do it by getting my mom to run to the store one day after a baseball game. Another challenge was not knowing how to connect the wax paper to the straws. I was able to do it by using little pieces of duck tape to connect them.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change how I put the wax paper on. The reason why I would change it is because the duck tape made it so there was many holes for air to get through. Also because the duck tape didn't look good.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the engineering design CTE program at Hastings High School. I think it connects to the engineering design CTE because I designed a parachute to fall slowly from a high distance.
My project connects to careers in Mechanical engineering because I designed my own parachute. Jobs that tie with mechanical engineering are automotive engineer, and manufacturing engineer. Those both tie with mechanical engineering because you are doing hands on designing.
