Year Level: 9
Duration: One semester
Periods: 3
Subject Type: Elective
This subject consists of a research assignment and practical electro-mechanical project.
Students investigate a topic related to transport & energy efficiency.
Students use the design process to plan and produce a remote controlled car.
They will design their car layout, learn to construct the electronics based on an Arduino microcontroller, develop their soldering skills and learn basic programming to complete their remote controlled car.
There is ample opportunity for students to extend the scope of their project beyond the basic functionality.
The animation above features examples of actual student work.
"System Engineering is fun and involves a lot of practical work and I want to continue this is year 10. It isn't too hard and also teaches you new skills. You work on one project for most of the term and so you can fully focus on it and not get too overwhelmed. There is more than enough time offered for work and it is all pretty straightforward. If you like making robots or other inventions and simple programming then this is for you." - Injela 2022
"I would definitely recommend it. To the people doing it next year, do the extensions for the remote control car. Trust me, its worth it. This is a great subject, especially the group work, and even the individual tasks you can do with your mates." - Akshay 2022
"I would absolutely recommend Systems Engineering as an elective as it taught me a lot and was a lot of fun to do! It was great and I am planning to continue it in year 10." - Tuhina 2022
"Do it. It’s fun. Burning metal in fun." - Nishik 2022
“Systems Engineering was an extremely well-planned and exciting elective I undertook in year 9. It helped me develop skills such as coding, engineering and hardware as well as learning how to use different tools, solder, wire components and even create a final product that I would cherish forever. I really enjoyed Systems Engineering and the opportunity it exposed me to.” - Anuk 2021
“System Engineering is a great subject to chose in year 9 to expand your knowledge of engineering and pave a way for fun learning. I highly enjoyed system engineering and if you pick system engineering in year 9, I think you will too.” - Jaidan 2021
"System Engineering is an elective that allows us to express your creativity. This subjects includes the elements of GWSC's creative process = Define, Discover, Develop, Creative, Communicate and Critique. This helps stretch your creativity and knowledge. The skills that you learn in System Engineering are around practical and digital work, such as, coding a remote, PCB, and building a remote car in year 9. This can help set you up for VCE, and is a fun and interesting subject that you should choose!" - Thomson 2021
