Soil Studies
Earth Sciences and Mars
Students testing the Earth and Mars soil at the end of the project to compare pH and nutrient levels. They also learnt about mineral and rock properties and about the soil composition on Mars. See THIS LINK for lab resources!
Soil Composition Lab
We have really enjoyed looking at the geology and composition of soil as part of this project. Our first soil lab was comparing the texture and composition of the Lunar and Martian soil compared to Earth with a sedimentation activity as well as observing the soil through microscopes. It has given the students the opportunity to think of the small requirements that make up the biotic and aboitic factors in any environment and the importance of protecting the nutrients of the soil and the complexity of this ecosystem.

Scanning Electron Microscope Comparative Soil Analysis
We also were able to study the soil under a Scanning Electron Microscope thanks to the University of Alberta. I had been in the UAE the week before and brought home a sample of their red Mars-like soil to compare and the conclusions were fascinating. It made a great lesson on the components of soil in a variety of locations as well as the importance of sustaining soil humidity and nutrients for proper plant growth.
Teachers please see HERE for the outline for the below general microscope lab you can adapt yourself.
