INDigenous stem

Under Construction!

My PD this year is all about authentically weaving Indigenous ways of knowing, culture, language and teachings into my science and STEM classes in a respectful and natural way as a path towards reconciliation and for the betterment of our community.  I am an ally learning as I go and I welcome any ideas, insights or corrections.  The biggest suggestion is to invite an elder or knowledge keeper to your class to teach directly.  A few suggestions is the ATA  Walking Together page as well as the Métis nation of Alberta

Indigenous medicines

Thank you to the support of the TD Friends of the Environment grant and my co-teacher, Julie Arsenault, we have been able to invite elders into our classrooms and learn more about indigenous medicines and so much more.  Project in progress to stay tuned for more here!

Braiding sweetgrass

This resource is a slideshow that introduces Braiding Sweetgrass (Young Adults) by Dr Robin Walkk Kimmerer with a slide for each chapter for a guided read-aloud.  Students can either doodle words or drawings, do colouring pages or even make Métis dot-art as they listen to a variety of lessons.  Each slide also has a list of themes that fit a variety of topics covered in Science, Social Studies and many other subject areas.  You can also see my other BSG resources that were designed to support the Three Sisters Garden and activities for the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.

Coding lesson in scratch

With the help of NativeLand.ca and the Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Center TikTok I was able to code an interactive story in Scratch to teach others about the Three Sisters Garden.  Click here to see the project and copy it to make it your own!
