The Spartan Steel Band was established in the fall of 2001 with funding secured by the late Greenbrier County Schools Superintendent, Steve Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin had seen a steel drum band play at a conference and had a strong desire to establish such a program at Greenbrier East.
Superintendent Baldwin expressed his wish that the Spartan Steel Band would remain an ensemble option for those who might not otherwise have such an experience. Staying true to his vision, membership to this ensemble does not require an audition, but is open to students on a first come-first serve basis.
The steel drum band meets 6th period each day during the school year, and performs at various school and community events throughout the school year, playing a mixture of Caribbean music and other forms including popular hits, movie soundtrack material, and selections from video games.
The Spartan Steel Band consistently receives Superior Ratings at the regional Solo & Ensemble Festival.
