Rate Anchor Chart and examples

Mathematics NSN Name:________

Anchor Chart: Rate = Total Cost divided by Quantity*

  • Quantity is the amount
  • Total cost is what you paid for the all of the quantity
  • Rate is the cost “per” item or rate is the cost for just 1 of the item

Example: 5 oranges for $2.00 What is the rate?

$2.00 divided by 5 = 0.40 or $0.40 or 40 cents per orange

Checking method: $0.40 x 5 oranges = $2.00 total cost

To check work backwards: rate x quantity = total cost

Critical thinking: Why is determining rate of value/important?

Action: Your turn (show the equation and checking process on grid paper available for you):

4 oranges for $2.00 What is the rate?

7 apples for $2.10 What is the rate?

8 pears for $4.80 What is the rate?

9 cabbages for $7.20 What is the rate?

Action: (round to nearest nickel, meaning you can only have a 5 or a 0 in the hundredths place value).

5 candies for $2.10

6 packages of gum for $5.90

7 bananas for $4.50
