Introductory mini-lesson
How can we use the journey of the story to create cards for our board game?
Cards can be connected to the emotions in the story or the central characters.
Teacher will use the board games previously used in Module 1 to introduce types of cards used in board games.
The game of life has cards such as “Be nice for a price,” “Fired for snoozing on the Job.” These are tied into the theme of the game life, where you can go out and have drinks with friends and enjoy yourself, also the job aspect where you can get fired. In the game Alex! There are cards such as DARE cards, and opportunities to get rich. These are also tied into the theme of the game, in terms of making money. There are plenty of chances to lose money and gain money.
Teacher Will: Have other Board Game Cards on display throughout the room. Students will look around the room at all the different cards and how they are related to the theme of the game.
Students Will: Go around the room and look at the different types of cards that certain games have.
Students Will: Come back to the rug and discuss the different types of cards that the game have.
Teacher Will: Write down different types of possible cards that can be used in games.
Some Card Actions include:
1. Win Money
2. Lose Money
3. Lose a Turn
4. Do a Task
5. Go to a Certain Spot
6. Give Money to a Friend
7. Take Money from all players
Teacher Will: Show students how to create the cards. Teacher will already have pre-cut construction paper cards that represent the playing cards. There will be several colors to choose from. Make sure to mention that to make the game easier and understandable for players you should stick to one color per deck. Teacher will pick a color and write on the back and front. The back represents what type of card it is. The front represents what action must be taken place.
Teacher Will: Hand out one card to each student and work on a card together.
Students Will: Begin working on creating their individual cards.
Students Will: Come to the front and present the cards that they have created.
