Lesson 2
Board Game Themes
Board Game Themes
Materials you will need for this lesson:
For this lesson you will use the board games that were used in Lesson 1.
Create a worksheet for a scavenger hunt that can be used by the students to identify board game themes.
See sample below:
Scavenger Hunt- Use the link or select the arrow icon on the top right to download the worksheet file to your computer.
Use one of the board games to model the concept of theme. Once students have identified the theme in the board game model lesson have them use the Theme Scavenger Hunt worksheet and work in groups to identify each of the themes in each of the games you have provided for them. Modify as needed based on the board games you are using.
Teacher will support group work as needed during the scavenger hunt.
Once they have completed this task, have them share their results with the class.
Teacher will create a graphic organizer using the smart board or an Elmo to chart the different themes. Students will identify any similar themes among the games.
Students can then identify other games they have played at home and identify the theme for them.
Finally, have students go back to the story they wrote in Lesson 1 about one of the board games and have them identify the theme of their story. Have students share their stories with the class and identify story themes.
