Year 5 just finished our first UOI of the school year. The central idea for our How We Express Ourselves unit was creative expression and communication may thrive through diverse media. We learned that movies don’t always need words to tell a story. In this unit, we got to direct, edit, and create our own movies using our imagination and changing fairytales or folktales. We also used what we learned in art, PE, and music to help make our films even better.
From our experience making the movie, there were both challenges and successes. Some problems were that people forgot props or costumes, and sometimes we had trouble managing our time. But we also had good moments, like finishing the filming on time and completing the editing before the deadline. In the end, we were really happy and proud of our final movie. We also learned that movies can show a character’s personality or message even without using words.
In PE, Year 5 students with Ibu Harna and Pak Alex explored capoeira, a Brazilian art form that combines dance, rhythm, and movement. This activity supported their Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, and gave them ideas for integrating movement into their movie project.
By practicing capoeira, students learned how movement can match different genres, whether for action, celebration, or storytelling. They reflected on which movements could bring energy and expression into their movie scenes.
Students felt excited and curious throughout the lessons. Many enjoyed the rhythm and teamwork, while others were proud of adapting movements to fit their creative ideas (their movie project). This experience showed them that movement is not just exercise, but also a powerful way to express a story and make it more meaningful.
