Year 1 Community Helper Living Museum
Our Year 1 students recently transformed into their chosen community helpers for the exciting Community Helper Living Museum. Each student enthusiastically became a firefighter, teacher, nurse, or other vital community role, sharing the findings of their research conducted using PebbleGo and engaging videos.
Proud Presenters
Throughout the presentations, students truly embodied the IB learner profiles of being knowledgeable and communicators. They confidently shared what they had learned with their friends, demonstrating clear and effective communication.
Attentive Audience
When listening to their classmates’ presentations, they showed they were principled and communicators by following the rules, paying close attention, and respecting others’ efforts.
Ready Reflectors
The learning experience continued as students completed peer feedback assessments, reflecting thoughtfully on their friends’ work. This reflective practice helped deepen their understanding and foster a supportive learning community.
This amazing event not only enriched students’ knowledge about community helpers but also nurtured important skills that will guide their growth as lifelong learners.
Introducing Zones of Regulation to Our Year 1 Students
We recently introduced the Zones of Regulation programme to our Year 1 students with the help of Ibu Dana, our Learning Diversity Coordinator.
This programme helps children develop important skills in recognizing, understanding, and managing their emotions in a positive way. By learning these skills, students build greater self-awareness, improve their ability to focus, and develop strategies to cope with challenges in healthy ways. This supports their overall well-being and helps create a positive, calm, and productive learning environment.
Through fun and engaging activities, our students experienced the four different ‘zones’ that represent feelings and states of alertness:
Blue Zone: This zone is for feelings when we might be sad, tired, sick, or bored. When students are in the Blue Zone, they may feel low energy or need to rest and recharge.
Green Zone: The Green Zone is when we feel calm, happy, focused, and ready to learn. This is the ideal zone for school and social activities where students can participate and engage positively.
Yellow Zone: The Yellow Zone is a warning zone where we feel anxious, frustrated, excited, or a little overwhelmed. Students might feel restless, on edge, or uneasy, but still have some control over their actions. It’s a great time to use strategies to calm down and regain control.
Red Zone: The Red Zone is for strong emotions like anger, fear, or feeling out of control. When in the Red Zone, students might need help from an adult to calm down safely and regain their composure.
By learning to identify which zone they are in, children develop important skills to manage their emotions and build strong relationships with their classmates.
Our Year 1 students have already started using the Zones feelings check-in every day in class. This simple routine helps them identify how they are feeling, reflect on their emotions, and choose appropriate strategies to support their well-being throughout the school day.
To support learning about the Zones of Regulation at home, Ibu Dana and the Year 1 teachers held an interactive parent workshop on Tuesday, 16th September, for our Year 1 parents.
During the workshop, Ibu Dana explained the Zones of Regulation framework and shared practical strategies for parents to use with their children. It was a great opportunity to connect, ask questions, and collaborate on nurturing our children’s social and emotional growth.
Thank you to all the parents who attended. We look forward to continuing to work together to nurture confident, mindful learners!
